Does the SOS function still operate outside of warranty?

This is applicable to all bikes that have it, but just wondered? Asked in my local dealership and they didn’t know. Given that BMW roadside assistance is part of the warranty package, and if you don’t have it, will the function be switched off?

I believe it's a one-off cost for life, or should be but my switch has an open circuit and needs replacement. Not that I will.

I don’t see why it wouldn’t work, the SOS function is designed to automatically call for help if the sensors on the bike detect a collision / accident or the bike has tipped. Whereas BMW assist within the warranty period is for assistance in a breakdown. How would the system know to not activate if the bike was out of warranty🤷‍♂️

Would have thought this only works if you purchase the roadside assistance.
Why would they honour attendance and alerts for the life of the bike unless you were paying?

  • Warranty vs. Roadside Assistance: The SOS emergency call is separate from BMW Roadside Assistance, which is a different service that may require a separate purchase or have different terms after the initial warranty period expires.
the BMW SOS button will work even if the bike is outside of its warranty period, provided the necessary equipment like Teleservices and Intelligent Emergency Call are equipped and the system is functional
. The emergency call system operates independently of the vehicle's warranty and uses its own cellular service.

I knew someone would pipe up with what it said in the manual.
Cheers

Very good.

Why don't they use proper English such as

the SOS feature is FREE for life.

or

The SOS feature only works while the warranty is active, after which it stops working. 🤷‍♂️

I apparently have Road Side Assistance, I've never used it or know how to use it. I presume I press the SOS button and ask for it. Is it like the RAC/AA/Green Flag? Is it to get me to a BMW dealer or get me home?

Mine worked outside warranty after a collision.
It was a couple of minutes afterwards when I went to pick the bike up that I heard a voice coming from somewhere and realised it was the sos operator. Nice to know he was prepared to stay on the line until he got a response although a louder speaker would have been useful.

Is it supposed to be used to summon help after a breakdown? Seems a bit like dialling 999 cos your cat is stuck in a tree

If you've just broken down you lift the flap and press the button, you then ask the operator to get recovery to you

Useful, although I never had it earmarked for that purpose and don’t remember it being touted by BMW as a breakdown helpline and thought it was primarily intended to call the emergency services on your behalf if you’re incapable of calling for help after a prang.

Dosent the system call a call centre not 999? So it could be quite easily ignored if it wasn’t in good standing with the company. JJH

Yes the SOS system definitely works out of warranty. Stopped for food in Henry Westons brewery last week on a ride out, left their cafe and after a few mins riding in narrow lanes, I hit mud on a bend at 15mph lost the front end and hit the floor. I got up and could hear someone asking if I was OK and do I need medical assistance. I wasn't sure what part of the bike the sound was coming from and didn't know where to speak into but explained I was OK and had hit a muddy lane. Fair play it was comforting to know if it was serious that there is help at hand.

When I went through a hedge shortly after passing my test about 38 years ago I could hear voices too. It was my mates laughing their bollocks off at my expense after cartwheeling over the top into a field! :D
I left the bike upright in the undergrowth in the process and even rode it home after. :thumb2
I had to walk about half a mile down the field to get to a gate to get back to my bike. :blast

If I drop my GSA I might just let it argue with my Apple Watch for a bit just for a laugh.
