I know it's probably easy, but I don't want to break anything. Do I have to remove the plastic spark plug cover before the rocker cover will come off and if I do what's the best way to do this?

With the two cover bolts removed the cover will move about 3mm away from the cylinder, it feels like it's being held by a rubber grommet or seal but I don't want to damage the joint faces by levering it.

Done it. Screwdriver wrapped in tape inserted at the top of the plastic plug cover, lever gently downwards. Two screwdrivers, one either side of the plug cap/coil, lever gently and off it comes. Now I can take the cover in to try and match the colour so I can paint the scratches.
