Ok, I can read Wikipedia about the differences, and the manual says use DOT 4. What happens if I use DOT 5 and flush it all through thoroughly. Will the seals rot, or what?

What does your bike's manufacturer recommend?

AFAIK 5.1 is synthetic and 4 is mineral, and they can't be mixed.

I'd guess that there might đ risk of damage somewhere in the system if you used 5.1 instead of 4, particularly if the manufacturer said something like "use only dot 3 or 4 fluid.V.

NO!

5.1 is not synthetic it is glycol based the same as 4 but with a higher boiling point. 5 is silicon and can't be mixed with 3, 4 or 5.1.
