hi all i am interested to now how to get off the big nut that holds on the down pips to the engine as they have seized solid will i have to drill the nut
that Sean

Hi Sean,

You can normally get them off with a cold chisel and hammer, I did cut one off with a hacksaw once but be very careful as you can cause serious damage to the thread on the exhaust port. Don't forget to put some anti-seize grease on the new ones

IIRC the perceived wisdom is if they don't undo easily with the proper spanner, then cut them off as a new set of nuts :augie is cheaper than the other bit of metal.

Sharp cold chisel, the nuts are made of very soft metal and will cut through quite easily. Dont forget that the threaded part does not extend the whole length of the nut so it needs to cut at 2 angles, one parallel to the thread and one across the front, outside edge, of the nut.

Bit worrying the first time I tried it but really does work. Even with the big exhaust nut spanner thing, some are still impossible to undo and new ones look so nice and are much cheaper than having to send the heads away for repair or buying clamps that grip knackered threads

One kettle of boiling water
One can Pluz Gas

Spray with the said pluz gas a few times the day or so before..repeat every few hours ( only need a little )....then using correct exhaust spanner at the same time pour the boiling water over the nut....take up the slack with the spanner and use short sharp twattings on the spanner with a 2lb hammer.

Should come loose then :thumb2.

If not, advice above re cutting off is the only option.

Wish i was that lucky.
One exhaust nut on JustStans bike was completely sh*%%$d.
Finally cut it off but the exhaust will just not come out. Used easing fluid and heat over 3-4 days.Spoke to Motorworks who suggested i leave it well alone , they have heads in the past that have sheared the exhaust stub off the head when too much " enthusiasm" has been employed to remove the pipe:eek:

So now evereytime i want to do work on the cylinderhead/barrel i have to remove the whole exhaust system:(
