This is my second 1200GS and after a 4 year break. I find I am making much more jerky gear changes in the lower gears which could be backlash in the drive train or it could just be me :nenau

So with your bike on the main stand and in first gear, how much can you rotate the wheel back and fore. Measured at the rim ( not the tyre) I can move mine by 40mm

hi ,somebody asked the same question a couple of years ago.when i checked mine at the time (2010 with 620 miles on it ) it had 60 mm backlash (at the edge of the tyre) now has 13000 miles same backlash .Think you just have to get used to riding a BMW again.Cheers Pete:beerjug:

Haven't measured mine but there is loads of backlash, hopefully BMW will fix this on the new water cooled engines transmission. Anyway you'll have to relearn feathering the clutch for now

I had similar feel and found the splines on the drive shaft were badly worn. Replaced the shaft and all is smooth again.

So you have no backlash?

I will measure mine this afternoon for you but it has been the same since new. Chain drive has more but you don't feel it the same because of the rubber drive which the gs doesn't have. Cars are the same as well but again have more dampening this time in the clutch.

Not saying I don't have backlash but it no longer as clunky as it was. In other words its a lot smoother to the point I don't notice it anymore.

We all have to have some backlash to accommodate thermal expansion of the gears, when measured at the gears with a dial gauge you will find it more than likely in spec. This tolerance is magnified when measured at the wheel. :blagblah
