Tech question guys:

Will the GPS feed wire work as the live feed activator for a relay to power a set of driving lights?

The lights will get power relayed from the battery with the relay being activated by a switch and the live feed from GPS feed socket hopefully

The Canbus may not enjoy the voltage spike that occurs when the relay opens, under load.
Better to use the same 12v source from battery, via a an inline fuse and take the 0v from the headlights, so lights work only with ignition on.

I wondered about taking it from the pilot light or the GPS. I guess the pilot circuit would be better?

Driving lights

Should only come on with main beam. They should extinguish when dip is selected.
However you may mean daylight running lights, which are a different thing altogether.

Why not take the feed to trigger the relay of the back of the accessory socket?

Used the GPS plug as a relay trigger for my aux lights for about 4 years, no issues.

Best,

S

I've a pair of DRLs (about 30w all-told), tripped by a relay fed from the dipped beam (Side lamp in the diag) feed plus a kill switch should there be a need to turn them off. So far as I remember the wiring schema is like the attached (but this may not come up to an electricians spec but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will say).

Nice drawing but illegal, and very unpleasant for other road users.
Driving lights must extinguish when not on main beam.

Hi Myke - that's what the 'kill switch' is for, so I can turn them off when riding at night with dipped lights. But you're right to alert us to the dangers of dazzling other road users.

That aside, are you saying that DRLs (and we are talking Daylight Running Lights) are illegal to use during daylight hours unless you have high beam on? I haven't researched that particular law but I never ride with high beam in the day so, if you're right, that would render DRLs rendundant for me. Not to mention there's a lot of bikers out there breaking said law.

BTW I was thinking of adding a second relay, activated by the main beam, that by-passes the 'kill switch'. Then the DRLs would come on automatically with the high beam to give a very useful spread of light immediately in front of the bike.

I stated driving lights, which also includes spotlights. That was what the original post was about - i think.
However, daylight running lights should not include foglights.
