Allihies again.. but off to Asia soon....
My son Neil at 9 years old has saved up 250€ for a drumkit, we are willing to double that. So my question to the Irish lads is where to buy, and new or secondhand...

Thanks....

Hi Richie

Strange co-incidence............but I was think about something similar for my 12 yr old.! I'm more inclined to start him on an electronic kit (so that he can plug in headphones and save our sanity).

I'll be looking around and following this thread.......:thumb2

Hi Paul, electric not so good I believe, and we have a nice place not far from home for him to drum in....

Having had both acoustic and electronic I can say that electronic are as good. Modern ones really are class - I now have a yamaha dd550. The reaction on it is brilliant and you can turn it up or down.
Having said that, the real thing is the way forward for a youngster - as I was. If you have a suitable place go for acoustic.
Try the drum shed on t'net. They post too!

Oh andget a zz top cd- its the easiest to learn:comfort

Hi Richie.

Do an interweb search for company called 'Thomann'. We got some stuff from them over the years. Delivered a drum kit here for €25. The postman wasn't real happy bout having to hump it out of his van

Thanks for all the help and the PM's... Can someone recommend a set from the site here http://www.thomann.de/ie/standard_drumsets.html

Cheers

Lets say a max of 550€ but it does not have to be that much if someone has a recommendation...

This one for example http://www.thomann.de/ie/premier_olympic_rock_22_schwarz.htm 333€ instead of 545€ free delivery...

Perhaps second hand would be best. a basic secondhand proper kit would be better than crappy new stuff from thoman that your kid Will end up throwing away. Perhaps boards.ie or biker.ie could yield a set of drums for you? Big bulky old things. Advantage of an new set could be the newer (and in tune'ish' skins) vs the old 'well bedded in' kit that just needs a service.

Electronic drums performance depend entirey on system latency

edit

damn. Might get myself a set of drums at that price!!!

Electronic drums performance depend entirey on system latency

Hi Flatknuckles

Can you elaborate ? What levels of latency make a system "good"?
And above what level do they become crap?

I cannot see any figures for latency, or indeed, any real specifications for any of these sets (eg on the Thomann site)

Thanks

Drumkit?

When I was around 4 years of age, I got a tin whistle for Christmas.
Had great fun blowing it all morning, then I fell asleep.
When I woke up again, I could not find my tin whistle, and never did find it again!

Finally ordered from http://www.thomann.de free delivery to Ireland. Took a bundle with improved cymbals and a seat plus some sticks.... 500€

A friend here on holiday from DE says Thomann is a great company and the drum kit is very good value for money. In any case I asked the Irish crowd what they could do for me and the answer was "compared to Thomann" nothing....

Delivered out west today, perfect, sound and look good (not that I know anything) the DE lad is still here so he helped put the lot together and tuned he says "excellent"

Only downer was that I did not need to buy a stool as it came with one as well, now we have two....

Thorough recommendation for thomann.de
