Hi All,

Im just in the process of buying a DRZ400sm, ive been looking at a few, one on this site as well as others.

Im after a 2006 or 2007 model, these though have varying mileages, what is the engine good for with regards to "mileage" in genaral, some are as low as 900 miles, through to 2k, 4k, 8k and 15k.

Of course the prices reflect this but what do you guys in the no think, and are there any other quirks or faults i should no about.

Thanks

a strong engine so I wouldnt think twice about buying one with 15k on it. I used to have a tuned E which I supermoto'd

cheers

Cheers Leigh,

I had heard the engines were pretty much bomb proof.

BTW nice job on the bike :thumb2

dont be put off by a noisy tickover though, only prob, really, (and its rare ) is the 2nd gear bushing, go on thumpertalk, masses more info on there than here

Cam chain guides usually wear out at 15-20k miles causing the cam-chain to run slack.

If you're doing the job youself, it's a day's work and about £75 for parts.

no, iv used em for years on race stuff, less pressure , less wear, proven stuff

That said, I've been to see a 1,900 mile 2007 DRZ and you could tell someone had ragged the tits off it. The tyres were absolutely ruined and if you factor in a 600 mile break-in period that's been done in 1,300 miles. That or it's been done in 1,900 miles and hasn't been broken in, more like smashed in.

I'd rather go for a higher mileage one that hasn't been spanked!

dont read too much into the MCCT stuff on TT...those guys fit MCCTs to EVERYTHING (not JUST DRZs) they are terrified of ACCTs

On the DRZ it matters though, there is too much pressure on the chain and it wears within 20k.

The DRZ motor was bullet-proof. Drove mine to Morocco and back with no issues. Same can't be said for the BMW 650...

Had both a SM and a S model. Changed to a manual CCT on the S as the cam chain was bouncing around due to a broken spring in the automatic tensioner. Caught me out on a green lane - had to push the bugger back to the main road!.

I had a 2007 model SM which I kept for about 6 months, got a bit bored with it (more of a toy than anything else) so sold it for the same money I bought it for. It needed a new battery within the first year - Not sure if there is something wrong but both my DRZ's seem to eat batteries.

Otherwise, engines are pretty sound and easily DIY'able, parts available cheaply from factors or ebay (Main stealers a little more expensive and most suzuki ones don't carry much for the DRZ anymore so they have to order in)
