DRZ400 Adventurer - it's coming...

The seat has room for a pillion - on the DRZ you sit right up with the tank between your balls. Not sure how comfy it would be though!

Pannier is that German one Magma raves about in "Toys & Equipment" section. I'm not impressed so far - it's not waterproof without silicon, 1mm thick aluminium and worst of all are the catches which spring up at 60mph causing the lid to hit my back (sorta Porsche 911 air-brake style).

Decent bash plate - no such thing as they all reflect noise from the dry sump making travelling a very loud affair. Been there and done that. Suzuki have just brought out a water pump protection kit for 6 quid which solves the problem of needing an after market sump. :thumb2

And the stuffed rat is from Ikea. :eek
 
Extra spec:

  • 2x Hella De (H3 HID'd)
  • Suzuki OE Carrier Frame
  • Suzuki OE Side Tool Carrier

The alu box is one recommended by Magwa. Some parts are thin (1mm) and it flexed bad. I fitted chip-board underneath, painted many times till waterproof and mounted onto the Suzuki carrier (which is excellent). It's now rock solid.

I'm glad you've stiffened up the top box as it did look a bit wobbly when we were out the other Sunday. The rest of the bike seems fine.

Just been chattin with my mate who's pleased as punch coz he's just bought a load of bits for his DRZ from some Geordie Geezer.
I've just showed him this post and. it looks like it's the bits you've taken off.

I did 10 years on a DR650 all over Europe....

I still wake up in the middle of the night screaming!!

Y2Blade, I haven't quite installed them all just yet but think it'll work out.

I don't have the original speedo unit. Instead I cut out part of the white plastic and have space for 1 full size ballast or 3 small ones mounted pretty much on top of the main light bracket. It's kinda tight but it does work.

The Aqualine comes with threaded inserts on the bottom for the cross-bar. I was advised to remove this as it flexes and fouls the front mudguard. This left the inserts for something else... Hella DE's ... perfect. :thumb2

I'm going to wire the H3 HID's to work from the H4 controller, so 105W main lights. Not sure how fast I'll have to keep the bike going to prevent the battery discharging with this load but it will be over idle for sure.

The DR should be up for any trip when you have finished.
If It help's, I had a Top box Mounted on the back of My XR400R,
It was used to keep the most important items In ,as it could be locked.

The problem starts when you go off road with it on,
I found it would get in the way when going down steep hill's and stopped me getting my weight over the back of the bike .

I have now removed the Top box,and just strap my tent to the rear rack.

I make sure everything I need fit's in the panniers.

It's going back to south Morocco first, over the dunes and west from Merzouga. Tim had warned me about it being risky, and so it was decided. :D

After that I'm intending to go deeper into Africa as Morocco will be "done". The hardest part at the moment is trying not to get bogged down with work.
 
Screen is from the F650Dakar (pre 2003 twin spark), a well known mod on TT and a perfect fit. A cool 95 pounds to you sir from BMW dealer. :mad:

if you look closely there is a fairing around the headlight - just under the screen........ :blast



A fairing is a structure whose primary function is to produce a smooth outline and reduce drag. These structures are generally light-weight shapes and covers for gaps and spaces between parts of a vehicle, aircraft, or rocket to reduce form drag and interference drag, and to improve appearance.

Ah right, it's called a "shroud" not a fairing???. Anyway, it's just the stock DRZ item.

I'm starting to wonder if it will ever stop. At what point do I stop modifying the bloody bike and start riding it? I've become paranoid about things failing as I don't want a repeat of the aborted Morocco trip earlier in the year, and it has to be ready to do the dunes etc in April, my next attempt.

Today I found a replacement for the Suzuki exhaust. It's not the first time I've tried to replace the exhaust. The last time I found the FMF to be a very poor fit and obscenely loud. We all think loud exhausts are cool, and they are for about an hour, but try living with the drone down a motorway for 10hrs and it's very tiring. This time I've gone for the DEP full system that I'm told is road legal.

My BMW sockets have failed the test. I found during extensive offroading the sockets would work there way loose and pop out. Today I've removed them and purchased the connectors that are used on radio controlled car batteries and the like. They are available on eBay for a couple quid and importantly have a clip to hold them together.

The HID's are all fitted and the Hella DE's are mounted under the tank. The light is brilliant, however frequent use quickly flattens the battery and after 1/2 day of testing I had to bump start the bike. But at least I now know the bike can be bump started. The wiring under the shroud is a mess. The position bulb has been removed and powers the DE's.

I'm in the final stages of testing. I'm very comfortable with the quality and ruggedness of the handlebar setup, engine protection and luggage setup but the screen is not to my satisfaction. I've angled it to an upright position like on Dakar preped bikes but this has meant using long bolts bent to the correct angle and the flex has gone - to the point I believe the screen will crack in a drop.

I need this new found space to sort the HID wiring and also to move some other electrics in place. Tomorrow I'll be building a new aluminium frame and cutting back the original white shroud. I might even be able to fit one of those Dakar instruction screen thingys.

Also, dropped the bike today and had difficulty picking it up. I reckon it's 180kg with all the fuel in.
