Final engine mods

I'm usually not one to carry out engine modifications because they nearly always result in increased noise or reduced reliability.

The previous owner had drilled 10x 10mm holes in the top airbox and removed the snorkle, which has the same effect as the 3x3 mod over on ThumperTalk. This increased induction roar (bad) but made the bike much smoother to ride without making it too lean. I found the noise too much going through France and Spain.

At the same time I had bought a FMF full exhaust, loud to say the least, but with the restricted header at the front removed and the holes in the airbox I was getting rediculously good mileage. As I recall stating, it cost £22 from Newcastle to Dover at 96p ~ Gallon. Back on the 1150GS it cost £28 to get to the top of Hertsfordshire, North London fringe!

But the noise was too much and the bike was put back to standard. I have yearned for the extra power and smoothness, not to mention the significant rise in MPG and that got the plastic working:

Added to the list:

  • TwinAir air filter
  • DEP stainless header

The DEP header is an exact copy of the original which means it can be used with the OE silencer. It doesn't have the restrictive washer in the middle pipe and so noise goes down and smoothness goes right up. I talking noticeably.

The Twinair filter (still a sponge :thumb2 ) is two stage and somehow, no idea how, the induction roar doesn't go through it. Thus I could open the holes in the airbox back up.

All this should make the bike run really lean, but it doesn't feel it (high reving with no go). It's no longer starved for air and it doesn't have the snatching at low speeds. The OE silencer still provides enough back pressure to keep the torque up right across the range and it shifts now - not far off the 1150GS!

The DRZ will do 95 tops, the 1150GS would do 110. Both by GPS. :thumb

So let's see what other mods have been done...

The BMW power sockets are shite. When off-roading the plugs would eventually vibrate out, also electrolysis happened pretty quickly.

And here's the perfect solution. Find packs on eBay for 99p! The terminals are shielded from one another so no corrosion. :thumb

I've made a lead to take the stereo out and mic from the zumo and feed to a mini 5pin DIN socket. I was plugging in directly to the zumo but in a crash it wouldn't disconnect easily, which would probably lead to something breaking.

I produced aluminium brackets for the screen support which is now close to vertical. It leaves a large amount of room which I could use for other things like an autocom, camcorder etc.

The HID wiring is hidden under black nylon. The stock white plastic part was cut back because of interference with the zumo bracket.

Also, shoving a nylon bolt through the muffs keeps them taught so no need to drill holes at the end for the bar weights.

Hi Snoopy,
I like te sound of that. Where you get the header and hopw much did you pay for it?

Cheers,
Jon

I got it from a guy on here. If you get the number for DEP from one of their UK stockists I'm sure they'll do you one cheap. I think new they cost around £120.

I recognise that location

Just realised where that shot was taken, different angle but that same sandy never ending piste. It looks a bit more barren now ......

  • Remounted the front light and shroud (raised forward and up)
  • Kelhin FCR39 Carb installed :bounce1
  • META M57T Immobiliser (transponder based)

  • Bespoke "Autocom" with booster amp, 35mm speakers, keyboard 5-pin coil.
  • Helicoils on sub-frame as alu corroded over winter and all failed.
  • Spare wheels (stock) acquired for off-road use.

Snoops, I love the fact that you are still doing this :blast:blast:blast:blast:blast

You could have ridden it around the world with just the big tank and a few spares.

Some guys have ridden around the world on stuff alot worse than the standard DRZ. All the money you have spent could have been used on travel.

I'd not think twice about running my little Dakar around the world if I had the cash/time/motivation. It's certainly good for going to morrocco and back.

Keep it up though, it's giving me a laugh :thumb

Not really, I've only spent 2-3k on it over 6 month. You could say the same about anybody who buys a BMW - just get a cheaper bike and spent the extra on travelling.

I tried taking the stock DRZ down to Morocco and it was a nightmare - I'd rather get the bike "right" then do further exploration, when I have the comfort, practicalities sorted.

I'm nearly there... nearly. :D

Is that including or excluding the bike :augie:augie:augie

It's never gonna be comfy unless you fit a king and queen seat on it fella.

I agree with the cash thing though. My 1150 cost me 4k and has done 20,000 trouble free miles. The Dakar is probably worth 2k and is comfortable, economical, reliable, quite handy off road and handles well on road.:thumb

Engine mods

I've installed an FCR39 carb, the airbox has been opened (aka 3x3 mod) and bike rejetted to a 160 for the free-er flowing header pipe.

It's 8.25PM and the video system is wired up. Nickleback is playing on the Zumo. It's time to see how 35bhp to 45bhp works...

[Youtube video coming up - in an hour or something...]

the enduro model has different cams aswell :blast

Does he know about compression ratio differences due to base gasket thickness?:nenau

Timpo.

Probably not don't tell him it'll never go back together again.
PS
He's coming out with the TRF guys in a couple of weeks I hear they're worried :augie
