Dual disk conversion Fork/Brake Change - Billet 6 POT?!?!

Appealing to the engineer's among us!

Do the questions ever end....... Probably not.
I hear that it is possible to put RT or similar dual disks on the front of my favorite aircooled off-roader!?
Has anyone done it?
Is it just a case of changing the lower legs of the forks and putting the calipers and lever on?
Is there an easy way to get rid of the RT's solid lines?

Or is it better to fork out (excuse the pun) for the billet 6 pot caliper I have seen on other Gser's pimped rides.

Which forks do you have? G/S or GS?

I have a 1993 R80GS, bumblebee if that makes any differance......

An easy and quite effective upgrade for that is the R1100 / K1100 / ... four pot Brembo as in this picture:

All you need to do is machine a few mm off the lugs to get the calliper center in line with the disc.

You used to be able to buy the 4-pot Brembo calipers prep'd for the R80/100GS but Motorworks & Motobins have stopped this practice fearful of lawsuits.

Shame as it wasn't a bad mod but only really comes into its own if you add a steel brake line and stiffened up the front suspension and added the HH pads that Rob mentions. I've been able to lock my front wheel up with a bit of a pull.

The twin disk option is expensive, not readily available and you are in essence fitting two crap brakes instead of one, an in improvement but not worth the effort.

The 6-pot Billet is a wonderful piece of engineering and will make light braking easier but I've felt the flex from giving a good pull on the lever and I don't believe the front end is up to the job of the stresses this caliper puts on it.

The best bang for buck I've seen and heard good things about is the 320mm Disk kit as mentioned by Cookie here.

The good thing about it is utilises the existing 2-pot caliper and was highly rated by Cookie, you could ask him again now but his memory isn't what it was of riding classic GS's and will need to use the search to remind himself what he thought ;)
 
It's been quite a while since I modified the front brake on my R100 GS-PD, but it went a bit like this.

Standard - appalling
Fitted steel floating front disc - dire
Fitted twin pot brake caliper - poor
Fitted stainless steel brake line - fair
 
Cheers Gessers, theres some food for thought. I'll have to improve my German and chase that 320mm conversion I think, combined with a braided hose and some pads that don't feel like their made from lard will improve the braking no end(o).
My understnading of German is improving daily trawling the sites for info.
