I need advice on how easy it is to utilise the power output (socket under seat)- Can I just buy a cable that plugs in under the seat and then plug straight into my device that needs elec?

I would like to be able to plug in power for a sat nav (not a big fancy installation one) just temporary lead when i need, or have an adapter that accepts all these chargers that run off a cigarette lighter output (found in cars)

All help appreciated as I havent the first clue right now...please help

(Part numbers/where to purchase for cables would be great)

In a word, yes.

It's easy.

The factory fit socket will take anything that draws up to five amps, so it will run a GPS and / or phone charger (or both at once) without a problem.

The plug you will need is called a Din plug or a Bosch plug or a Hella plug, several threads on where to buy one or go to Nippy Norman's site on the banner of UKGSer. The centre of the plug is positive, the outside negative.

You can't blow anything up. If you draw more than five amps, the Canbus system will fail to safety, cutting the socket off until you take the plug out and turn the ignition back on.

If you want to run something with a car cigarette lighter type plug.

or even two:

Easy: http://www.motorworks.co.uk/bmw/pro...ets,+leads+and+plugs&modelcode=90&partcode=ZA

If you want to work out what amperage something draws, it's easy, too. The formula is A (amps) times V (volts) = W (watts).

You know your bike is always 12 volts (V). Many items, for instance heated clothing, show the wattage (50 watts, say) on the garment or on their website- so the amperage is near enough 4 and bit, ie. less than five, so all will be well.

V12 x A? = W50. the question mark has to be 4 and a bit, it's simple sums. With this formula you can always work out any one of the unknowns, providing you know two of the other three values.

Thank You!
Just to ask - after I get the plug, can I get a long lead to power up my GPS? lie a 1/4 jack on a lead back to the Din plug?

I guess so, yes. Why not? Providing you can join the device's power 1/4 inch jack plug to the other end of the lead.

Any reasonable length of reasonably thin twin core flex will do. Halfrauds sell miles of the stuff. You do not need a fuse, providing you connect the lead DIRECTLY to the socket under the seat. The 'fusing job' will be done by the Canbus system.

EDIT: Just realised you may mean a pre-made lead, perhaps? The answer is, quite possibly. What make of GPS device are you wanting to power up?
