Heading up to the ABR event on thursday evening I found myself just three hairpins away from the bottom of Zig Zag Hill with no headlight and a misfiring engine, which then died shortly after and just "clicked" rather than turning over.
After spending more than 6 hours at the roadside and still no recovery I started walking, gettinga lift at 04:05 . Strong words to my breakdown insurer will follow.

A brief look on friday, followed by a chat to a local mechanic gets us to a failed Alternator as the most likely culprit. More investigations to follow.

Its a 2018 reg but very low miles, just turning 1400. What say the massif as to how likely a sob story to BMW will get sympathetic response such as free parts and free labour?

I live in hope.

Fully serviced on time by your local dealer will help ;)

Last seen on the purchase date, and serviced by my mate dave , prolly wont do you any favours

Could be rectifier regulator or both !

Need to diagnose it, Charge the battery, Let it rest for a few hours to reach normality after being cooked for a while and check the voltage

Get a Decent Multimeter and set it to volts DC, Check the battery volts with ignition etc all off Should be 12.5 + or - half a volt

Say it is 12.6 and you turn on the ignition volts will drop a little maybe 1/2 a volt This normal as headlamps and fuel pump draw power

Start it and what you are looking for is 13 and a half to 14 and a half ish volts to show when rev'd to say 1500 to 2000 revs (those are just nominal figures as an example but you want to see more than when you switched on the ignition when you rev it

If it stays the same or starts to drop?
then turn it off and look at the reg rect unit and at this stage you need to know is it a 2 wire or 3 wire AC into it from the stator What you will do is disconnect the plug from the stator and measure between the phases with the Multimeter in 200V AC mode

it will be somewhere about 24 plus or minus a few volts If you get one phase but not another then it is the stator

If they are all about the same it is then likely to be the rect reg unit

In reality they have usually been ridden so long in a bad state that the stator will suffer damage too Check with Electrexworld.co.uk for replacement they were always so helpful when I was fixing bikes

OK Santa, I see the picture.
And Dr F thanks for the direction of enquiry.
Will update as and when (and try not to think about the money!)

Got the bike sorted, shipped on the regular freight boat from Poole last week - and it fell over on the journey here! Exhaust and passenger footpeg frame thingy damaged.
Is there no end to this bikes misfortune??

This is not an uncommon problem

I had a g310 in 2021 and the issue is the allen head bolts backing out and destroying the windings . I think I still have a spare new in the box genuine replacement if you need it

Electrics sorted by replacing everything, just the shipping damage to get sorted!
