OK, i have a 2009 MacBook 13.

It has 10.8.2 (latest?) software.

There are no software updates outstanding for it. All seems to be as normal.

Got to work this morning and a few people asked me what the email was I sent them. I never sent one!

Got home and my inbox is full of replies from people i have apparently emailed(:nenau) where no reply was returned. It appears that i sent everyone in my address book some sort of link to a website i have never even heard of???

So, do i have a virus? I thought these Mac's were exempt from them! Did a google search and came up with nothing really conclusive, just a suggestion that i change my password, well i would do if it were that easy!!!!! Cant find on the laptop where i do this? Will it help?

Anyone else had this??

Steve.

Is this an e-mail account hosted by your ISP or an on-line account such as Hotmail...?

Bit of advice, go to www.sophos.com and download some free virus protection for the Mac. Macs don't get much in way of viruses, however, it saves you passing them on to others.

Like the previous post said, it's more likely that your email account e.g. hotmail, has been hacked and you need to change the password on the website of that account and then change it in your Mail/Preferences Accounts where you have your mail settings for that account.

If you need any further help, PM me.

Blimey that was quick!!!

OK, the email is done by service provider, BT YAHOO.

It seems on doing some more digging that it is most likely what you guys are saying, i.e. someone has hacked into my email account rather than my laptop.

P.M sent!

Yahoo is suffering badly from this at the moment, I think some bright spark has worked out how to hack their accounts.

Thanks to all who replied. It appears that my laptop was not hacked (they are impenetrable after all:P) but some sad arse has hijacked my BT account.

I've changed all my details so should be OK now:thumb2

Thanks again,

Steve.

Mine was slightly different ....

Whereas I get a few of the kind of emails your talking about, an email with no subject line and when you look at it there's a link to something like Viagra, drugs or whatever, from someone that has me in their address book, I just delete and nothing becomes of it.

I never ever open an email with the subject line not completed ;)

My Yahoo account, not my computer (iMac) was hacked in to and everyone in my address book was sent an email from me asking for financial help cos I'd had my bag stolen in Cyprus and was stuck. A bag, I ask ya :blast Everyone knew it couldn't be me :D

Having sent those emails the bastard then removed all my contacts in my address book so I couldn't warn folk :censor:

I changed all my passwords and log in details. Nothing else happened and nothing became of it. The common denominator was Yahoo :(

:beerjug:

Edit ... the guy had obviously some knowledge that I travel, had opened an email account almost identical to mine, one letter different, and this one was the one to click on to to reply to me, as they thought, but in fact were now replying to him :blast

It appeared that this happened to a friend of mine. I look after his PC as he is well into his 70s. I was rather surprised as his PC is well protected. After investigating it appears that someone else got a virus that got his e-mail address from the other PC and pretended to be my friend sending out lots of spam e-mails.

My hotmail was hacked every time I logged on the inbox filled up with unsent message porn spam
I changed the password to one with a mixture of upper lower case and numbers
All ok now except too many fecking passwords :D
