Can anyone help me?
I have a large (I pressume) email trying to come through to my outlook express and it is taking so long to download that its actualy jamming up my computer and the server keeps disconnecting after about 25 minutes even though only half of the email has arrived (according to the blue progress bar thingy in outlook)
Can I get rid of this email before it downloads or do I just have to keep trying?
PLEASE HELP ME !!!! this is now the second evening of this nightmare!!!!

Try this site to log onto your account over the web:

http://www.mail2web.com/

You may have to use the Advance login option in which case you will need all your account details.

Anyway, if you can get in, you will be able to delete the email from the server (as well as see any message) without downloading it.

Same as the last reply - but check if your ISP has a web interface for their own mail and use it directly without any setup. e.g. AOL - you can get your email on the web directly at www.aol.co.uk

Sherps....presumably you're on Dial-up??

Do you actually know what the e-mail is?

If you don't, do what Paul said and delete the fekker straight from the server......or you can probably adjust your email settings temporarily on your ISP's home pages......you can very often change the amount of time messages stay there before they are automatically deleted...set this to its minimum so the message is purged, then reset it to something sensible (I.E the maximum time inbetween the actual frequency you check your emails plus a few days in case you're away on a dirty weekend)

If you do, one thing you could do is do a search for programmes like 'keep-alive'......that actually keeps your internet connection alive even though servers time out....but there are ones available that will try and keep e-mail server connections alive as well.

Also, in control panel>system>advanced you'll find a way of adjusting the priorities the CPU and system applies to tasks......you can set background applications to run with lower priority which should allow you to carry on using the PC......the CPU shouldn't need much processing power to do its job downloading but it sounds like it's taking over and freezing you up.

Finally, if you do know what it is, you must know who it's coming from....if the above doesn't work, delete it using the methods even further above and ask the silly billy who's sent you such a whopper to break it down and resend it in bits......or zip it, or whatever.........

is your pc also set to disconnect if no activity after say 30 mins?

the pc doesn't see the e-mail as activity, I think it looks at keystrokes/mouse movement etc.

that could also be the prob

Outlook Express also gets ots knoickers in a twist if the message takes longher to download than the time between checking for new mail

A possible solution is to change the time between checking to allow for the long download, somewhere in the Tools/Options menu I think.

Otherwise, the only/best solution is to use the web interface if available or else get in touch with your ISP and they can delete it for you.
