Arrived in Goa to the heat smells and crowds of India
A 1 hr bus trip to the hotel was the first sample of what was to come road rule wise, anyone who has had a go on the mighty mouse in Blackpool pleasure beach will understand.
We got to hotel and had a day sitting in the pool drinking beer and chilling ready for the next days event.
Day 2
Warm up day, this day enables you to get used to the Indian traffic and the idiosyncrasies of the Royal Enfield. This is when I first met Roderick who had the same mannerisms of Sgt Wilson out of Dads army and chased him around Goa as he went of in the completly wrong direction of the other 80 competitors .
Chasing Roderick back to the pact
Day 3
Is designed to break us all in gently, this rally stage sees us tackle a beautiful and demanding stretch of the western Ghat mountain range on our way to Palolem, our first nights destination. Palolem is one of Indias most beautiful beach resorts; During the riding day l encounter mountains every bit as spectacular as the Himalayas, just with lots and lots of forest and no snow peaks, due to the reduced altitude. Today is short in length to give us all a chance to build confidence. It is a stunning and remote ride. The accomodation was a tad different from the previous day.
Day 4
The second days riding is longer and more demanding but feels no harder due to the fact you are becoming more confident on your bike
Two crashes first one I ran into the back of a lorry whilst reading my route map and got stuck second one was when Nick one of the team leaders stopped dead and turned his bike to block the track so I T-boned him
We wind our way on and off road all the way over the mountains and back to our nights stop point at a truly secret cove, looking out to the Arabian sea.
Todays damage
Day 5
We start off with a short stretch of highway, which by Indian standards is very quiet, we then take some beautiful winding roads up the mountains but due to 2 lorries crashing we filter through over 400 lorries, not an exaggeration on dust tracks up the mountain on road up the inside outside wrong side in through the trees clutch's burning out every where.
We stopping for lunch at Indias highest waterfall; Jog Falls. Where a man makes a living out of a cow standing on him, how did he get into that line of business
After banana and honey pancakes we crack on towards our final nights stop, a bustling Indian city of Shimoga. Shimoga sees no tourists whatsoever, Untill I arrive I got a lift with the Indian mechanics in the back of a jeep into the city looking for an ATM I couldn't see out the jeep so hadn't a clue where I was they dropped me off I had no phone and couldn't remeber the name of the hotel so with no clue of where I was I wandered the streets where pigs, dogs, cows rummaged through the rubbish and open sewers then a crowd of kids stalked me shouting white boy and laughing
Eventually I bumped into one of the guys and got back to the hotel
This lorry had just crashed in front of us as his brakes had cooked and couldn't make the bend
Day 6
It was so good it’s almost too much for the mind to take in. We spent hours riding the bikes up and down roads that haven’t been used by traffic for decades – at some stages we have to send a chainsaw gang in before we tackle it, as nature has taken it’s hold so firmly. The scenery is awesome but the road conditions changeable. We finish this tough day with the sun setting behind us as we chase shadows all the way to the incredible mountain resort of Kalasa nestled in the vast Elephant area of Kudremukh National Park.
Day 7
Today is another long and demanding ride as we make our way to Mysore, ancient summer seat of the Raj. Mysore is a city much more used to tourists due to it’s regal status, proud history and beautiful buildings. We got a Tut Tut to see the palace where 80,000 lightbulds light it up got some pics then 8 of us got into 2 Tut Tuts and offered an extra 20 Ruup's to the first one back feck the whacky races ensued
Day 8
Mysore to Masinagudi is a beautiful and short day’s riding. For me this is my favourite area on the entire trip, it’s dense tiger reserves, huge wild elephant populations and friendly villagers that was until a crowd of kids ran out onto the road there was no way I would stop in time so rather than skittle the wee gits I abandoned ship and aimed the bike at a bus shelter no damange apart from holes in ma tw@t breeks and my carpark attendants jaiket.
Day 9
Day off . We sat and chilled by the pool whilst a dog fell out a tree house and crashed through the palm leaf sunshade
But it was fine
Day 10
We leave the beauty of Mudumallai and head off up the mountain to Ooty, once there we tackle one of the most amazing rides in India, another secret road that Enduro India have special permission to ride. This ‘road’ doesn’t appear on any maps and certain stages have been closed to foreigners since the 1960’s. Riding this road – and it’s 100 hairpin bends is one of the most amazing and challenging stages on the rally. . Today sees us finish at Kodaikanal. One chappied decided to get of his bike and park it under a lorry on one of the bends
Day 11
First we leave Kodai and spend 2 hours descending the beautiful and high mountain. Then we hit the stunning wildlife sanctuary of Indira Gandhi and Chinnur, with their awesome switchbacks and great tarmac
we hit the tea country and Munnar national park.
"Land of hope and glory"
