Thanks all for the responses. Nobody seems to have had any particular criticism of any particular brand so I still can't make up my mind! So much choice doesn't make it any easier.
Another thumbs up for MachineArt Xheads. If you think they're "just a bit of plastic" you're seriously mistaken ... maybe do a little more research before committing.

They're nylon and nylon is a plastic!! .
If fitting both bars and covers then it will give more protection but if it's just a choice of bars OR covers I would think the bars would give more protection generally. You can never protect against all eventualities, like in some of the previous photos where a rock or something has hit between the bars and broken the cover. In that situation it may have still broken the cover even if it had the nylon covers on.
Goes down to which you prefer the look of and how much you want spend.
I like the Machine Art Moto option, I had them on my RT and had a low side at 20ish MPH. Just some scuffing to the protector, that never made it to the metal so could easily dust off and ride again.
