Hi guys been searching for a set of engine bars for my 1150gs,i have a crud catcher, and loads iv seen seem to run across where this fits,my old GSA had the oem adventure bars and with these i could fit the front crud catcher no probs,so my question is which ones are best to use that dont prevent routine maintenance, and mean that i can retain the front crud catcher,i quite like the full jobbies that protect the tank and upper fairing handy for hanging the speedos on to dry,any advice very welcome...what you drinking tonight....

I have the full heed bars on my 1150. They don't allow the heads to be removed so far as i can tell.

The paint is wafer thin but they fit well. Not sure if they will work with the crud catcher.

Hepco & Becker are the best ones for protection but they seem to vary regarding rocker cover removal, at worst two of the mounting bolts may need slackening off.

I have had 2 GS's with sw motech bars, good for servicing but no cross brace across the front. I've never crash tested them thankfully.

cheers guys, yes quite like the Heed ones, but like the others they all seem to have fixing that goes around the front proud of the bashplate, need to find a pic of a bike with the crudcatcher fitted plus bars,im guessing though all are easier to remove than the GSA ones, defo need to get some......

HEED

steppers is going to service my bike next week so may go that route, although iv taken a better look at the Heed full bars on fleabay and it looks like the crossbar will run behind the crudcatcher so maybe they will be a goer....

Ill try and remember to get you some close up and side shots of the lower brace for you.
A serious question..why do you want the bars?

If its just for the look then fine carry on..
If its to genuinely protect from crash damage then I'm not convinced that they will do that much more over and above steptoe's guards which are still on my list of stuff to get.

I've got mine due to the off roading they make picking the bike up much easier and will hopefully limit head damage - time will tell.
Ive already scratched the side of the tank off roading.

I went to gap the rockers at the weekend and its practically a full dismantle to get them off. The high tank guards limit any latitude of movement. I would say dont get unless you really need/want them.

on the query above about what protection bars give in reality, I can tell you - last time I raced my 1150 Adv I jammed between two tree roots and two trunks on an enduro section, the bike went over like a dying horse and my OEM bars saved the TPS the throttle boddy the beak the lot as it jammed hard into the tree trunk
I was pretty close to smacking the clocks then too - I dont even want to think about dragging the heavy b@stard out of that mud pit and the ensuing 20 miles back to the HQ.

I wont be offroading proper with the bike although will do gravel tracks when touring it,i did around the Pyrenees, northern and southeastern Spain on my 1150gsa and dropped it a few times and the bars saved it everytime, bars for me are a must on road with these lardy motos, maybe offroad they get in the way a little not sure...

Back in 2009 Taz (dave) went sliding down the road at high speed while doing a track day at Rockingham with a pair of my headguards fitted.

He picked the bike and carried on.

Beware some crashbars that "dig-in" and can flip the bike, the genuine bmw ADV crashbars are renowned for tipping the bike onto the tank and instruments (especially with a full tank of fuel) causing enough damage to write the bike off even at walking pace.

Taz's bike with the headguards fitted.

crash bars

Today I had a very low speed spill on Sutton Bank in north Yorks.

i had crash bars fitted... i had to avoid a rock in the middle of the road whilst on full lean... the crash bars caught the kerb side and chucked me off on the verge... the bike did a full 180 because the crash bars caught.....

The fooker landed on my legs, after doing a full 180...... no more crashbars for me......yoing for some of steppers guards next....

fookin scary how they flipped my entire bike...

ok point taken, looks like the head guards are fav,the only thing though is if the bike say goes over with bars there wouldnt be any inward force to the heads barrels etc, because the bars would soak up the impact wouldnt they? whereas the head guards would stop damage but would'nt the impact put loads of inward force on the heads etc? or maybe im talking bollox...do alot of that...:blagblah

I would say off road they do way more good than they do harm.
The only downside I have found to them is they add extra width low down (as if the heads werent already low and wide).
If you do drop the bike they make picking it up and awful lot easier especially the tank bars.

I would say you are way more likely to drop the bike either wheeling it around or going off road. A road accident is much less likely but point taken that if you do come off the bars may cause more damage.
