Engine dies on me...

My 1150GS Adv SE has an 'intereseting' characteristic... when I picked it up at the end of Sept, I ran it in over the deriod of a week - a couple of times it died on me, nothing major - alway's with the clutch in while rolling to a stop. Figured it was me. First service went ahead - all's well.

Week before Christmas it did it again, then again - to the point that on the 23rd Dec it did it 6 times on one journey (stop start traffic through central London). Called the good people at Vines (supplier) the next day and to their credit, they said bring it that day (I couldn't, so in it went on the 24th).

Picked it up on the 31st, they'd given it a good ride, hooked it up to the diagnostic thingy - but bar upping the idle a bit (it had been waivering below 1000rpm), they couldn't find anything wrong. Which as it was an intermitant thing I figured they wouldn't - sods law etc.

All has been well since, until this morning - following traffic at walking pace with the bike in 1st, but with the clutch in, she gently died again - starts straight back up on the button, mind.

Only got approx 1200 miles on her, most of the journey's are a mix of London traffic and short A road blasts, coming from a GSXR, I don't 'granny' her - but then don't wring her neck either - just use it like it was designed to be used.

Anyone got any clues/thoughts out there?

Cheers - Richard

Hmmmm.... Sounds like a bad wire somewhere.

With the bike running, slowly move the handlebars through the full range of motion. See if the bike dies. If it does, the ignition wiring harness is messed up (somewhat common depending on where a wire tie was placed while on the assembly line).

No idea whatsoever ;)
You`ll have to become good at fault diagnosis.
Check all connections to the coils for good fit. Battery connections? Loose fuse? Side stand cutout? :thumb

This is a total wild card, and may turn out to be total bollox,but...............

You mention rolling to a stop, with the clutch in...........

So,is the throttle closed at the time...???

I`m just wondering if something is going on with the fuel injection, and it`s shutting down ??

There may of course be any kind of as yet undiagnosed fault with your bike, but perhaps some combination of the transition from riding under power, then coasting to a stop with a closed throttle,is causing some weird mixture of signals within the system ??

As I said...just a wild card...but you never know....

another wild guess, you said you were running in, is the tickover a bit low and the engine a bit tight. raise the tick over to 1200ish and see what happens.

another thought, is the clutch dragging when it gets hot in traffic??

It needs to have a good session on the diagnostics computer. My bike developed a fuelling gltch once the engine was fully warmed up - ie 5 bars showing on temp gauge. With the bike at rest with the clutch out the engine would gently putter out.

The fault was eventualy traced to a HD lead which had a small spilt in it, causing it to arc, altho the lambda probe and a temp sensor had also failed.

Good luck, these small glitches are the worst.

Had the same problem on my 03 Adventure twin spark just after a service once. Basically the idle level was too low and once I was ringing the engines neck especially around London off lights etc.... the engine would stall as I came to the next light. Idle up and the problem went away.

HTH, Nick

Aha! Ricardo me old chum. My KTM Duke did the same thing, I used to sit at lights wringing it's neck...mind you you can do that on one of them without looking like too much of a plonker...bit different on yer Adventure... :)

Hope you sort it, don't want it to put you off the old girl, before you start.

Happy New Year to you... SOON!

Me too !

Adventure SE !!! Now I have the same (white) model and guess what ??? Mine has cut out on me twice   . They were different days and in each case I was coming to a halt at traffic lights. Restarted no problem but I will keep a watch on it from now on.

Dear All...

Thanks for the swift thoughts... I'll head off and do some investigations re: wires / coils etc. Regards fuelling - She was idling around 850 - 950 before she went back to Vines, which I know was below par. Generally Idles now around 1050-1100, although I do also notice that the idle can vary depending on how I've been riding, sometimes she's bang on the 1100, other times she's waivering around 1000

Interestingly, Commuters comments ring true with reagards the day she did it 6 times in a row, as each time I restarted I did wring it's neck with an understandable mix of fustration and desire to move ahead before the folk behind ran me down. So maybe that was cause and effect?

Throttle is closed when I'm rolling to a stop, and it's a very gently fade away - no splutter. I'll keep you all informed.

Guess the bloke making the white ones, wasn't keen on them. ;-)

DJ...Beers soon eh?

Richard

Ive had new bikes do this to me before.
Worse with singles, cant tell you why but mine got better with mileage.(vtr 1000 honda and super tenere yamaha, worse was a honda dominator)

Watched the tacho all the way home... and it seemed to idle at anywhere between 900 and 1100, I'm thinking upping the idle some more might be an idea as suggested.

I've had electrical problems on cars and bikes before and this does feel more like a fuel problem (all seems OK visually). I've got a feeling/hope that maybe at 1200 miles things are still tight and getting used to moving together...maybe?

Well see...

Cheers - R
