Just recently when I go to start the bike, the engine turns over once or twice maybe then stops, I can still hear the starter whirring over but not engine as if starter has become disconnected from engine in some way. Anybody had similar experiences, know a fix?

By the way 1150 GS.

Could be a problem with the starter motor not engaging the flywheel properly.
The starter gear /shaft may simply need cleaning/lubing (not too much lube) or the starter may be on its way out.Others on here have reported the breaking up of the starter internals. How old is the battery?.
Its fairly easy to remove the starter, but make sure you disconnect the battery + lead first.

Starter motor

All sorted, motor taken off cleaned, lubed, vaselined put back, has never sounded better.

Follow up to atarter problems

Still getting aforementioned problems, does anybody know of a good auto spark in cambridge area to have a look at starter and not charge lots of beer tokens.

Or is it fairly straight forward to strip and rebuild yourself, when I took starter off last time I only cleaned gear etc, did not completely strip down, saw rivets and stopped at that thinking that it would not go back together to easily.
