I have bad corrosion on engine front cover. I have removed the cover but not sure what to use to recoat? maybe hammerite [does this need an etching primer?] or is powder coating a better option? Any one any advice?

I take it that the bike's out of warranty. In which case, I'd have it blasted and painted with two pack epoxy.

You can buy silver engine spray paint from your BMW dealer.

What about the cylinder heads? I have "bubbling" paint near the edges by the gasket which links to the rocker-covers. I was told that it was a special heat resistant paint and that it couldn't be patched up. Was offered replacements under warrenty but was warned that as the problem is common, may well end up having to partially "re-run-in" the engine only to face the same problem a few months down the line. :nenau

Ditto, I've used the silver BMW spray on the gearbox cover and rockers. It will transform the looks and doesn't bubble, if you prepare it properly ie get rid of the previous bubbles and grease etc. It comes in two cans from BMW, one is a laquer (spell?) and the other a silver spray. It matches the GS silver PERFECTLY. It will get rid of the yellow stains from fuel. The dealers use it to touch-up used bikes, apparently ;) .

Watch this space. I'll pop in the garage later for the number.

BMW part No 51912323167 "ORIGINAL COLOURSYSTEM" 150ml tin. It comes in 2 tins , one paint spray, one lacquer for finsihing it off. I was told not to bother with the lacquer, so I didn't. I used it on the rocker covers and everything else on my 1100GS and the engine looked new after that. I took my time masking bits off and cleaning the grease and grime off. It covered yellow petrol stains brilliantly, and it lasted too. Good luck.

thanks

still trying to find a colour match for the blue of the Adventure rocker covers though - anyone help?

preparation

And if you don't fancy stripping the affected parts off and sending them away for a blast, is there a sucessful way to prep them at home? Some of the shapes are quite intricate and it looks like it could be hard to get right into the small spaces- any ideas?

The cans arn't expensive. About a tenner I think. I used cotton buds for the nooks, soaked in white spirit to get the dirt and oil out. I used really fine wet 'n' dry to prepare the surfaces. Most of the surfaces will be fine with just a wipe where there is yellowing etc.
