Just back from a ride out with the misses and we got caught in load of traffic, so the 1150GS was getting hot and I noticed a rattle coming from what I thought was the front of the engine, not the cylinders, it was getting louder as we made a way through the traffic so we stopped and let it cool down. When I then started it sounded better but I am sure it has not completely gone. It sounded a chain rattle to me. I have fitted the new LH cam chain tensioned but not changed the RH. Any help would be appreciated. :(

Yes they'll do that it's a 'normal' sound when they get hot.

I've been riding slowly on a very rocky track with a slight following wind and heard the same noise, looked down and temp had come up a bit:thumb

Using 20/50 oil helps.

My 2nd 1100 had a similar thing. I worked it out to probably be the camchain tensioner on front left engine (2.21, R1100 haynes, top R/H pic::D). It is run off the oil pressure and like K's can get rattly when hot, hot. Mine was pretty rattly when normally hot and I was instructing at the time so spent a fair bit of time in town traffic!

It rattled when i bought it and it still rattled when I sold it 35k miles later...

Thanks for the help. I am using 20/50 oil, The engine is norrmaly not too noisy and this is the first time I have noticed such an increase in this noise. Is the R/H tensioner oil presure fed as well and do they wear or is there a updated version that can be fitted.

There is actually three chains. One for each cylinder and a big one under the front cover. The big een is the one i was talking about and it was a ratatat loud rattle. The main complaint/concern on threads is the two cylinder ones but these are not as noisy and are more common.

it's common for them to get really rattly when properly hot. Mine used to worry me,but it's perfectly normal.

mine rattles like buggery when hot
thought it was bust last time green laning.

all ok though - just slappin aboot its own innards!:augie

I was caught in central london once, on a very hot day. i nearly shit myself the noise the bike was making. No damage done.

Thanks for putting my mind to rest, must admit it was very worrying at the time, and I did stop to let it cool down rather than carry on, which by the looks I could have and once I was on the open road it would have cooled down. Just a thought has any body thought of a small fan behind the ail cooler.

I do think this has been done possibly on police escort bikes parhaps in hot climates I am sure this has been done unless of course I am thinking of K series. But I have ridden my bike thorugh deserts and death vally and it got HOT! but no damage done still going well at 87000 miles!. (even passed the Mot today!!) You aint heard rattles till youve ridden a Vincent!!
