Engine running really lumpy, not rideable

Hi all,

Went out to the GS yesterday evening for a ride, and she wasn't starting - had the classic symptoms of a flooded engine. (used to have a Vespa, happenned all the time!)

In the end the engine did engage but she is lumpy as hell and afte ra few minutes statick running, when I gave her some revs and tried pulling away the engine died.

It's sounding (and smelling) like far too much petrol in the combustion chamber. The bike was set for a month unused (but not unloved).

I did whip the tank off before I left her, but refitted it all (or so I thought) before it went back on.

The bike probably does need a new battery however, but this doesn't sound like an ignition problem to me, but I may be wrong...

Any ideas where the problem might be?

Water in the fuel?

Fuel pipes definitely fitted the right way?

Can you hear the fuel pump going when you turn the ignition key?

Just a couple of thoughts.

Also, you could check your throttle cables. Not unusual when the tank's been off for one to become unseated and put the fast-run onto one cylinder. Makes the engine sound like a tractor.

sounds like a cert in this case :)

Crikey I love this forum...

Will check the throttle cables when I get back home. Could save an expensive trip to the BMW garage!

Solved!!!!

Thanks everyone. Will forever now look out for this one silly little bit when I take off the tank.

Completely agree.

The £12 for this forum has paid itself back ten fold. Honestly, I've never had this amount of knowledge given with (relatively little) sarcasm.

Can't speak highly enough of the guys here. Especially for an engineering newbie like me.

I took the bike out for 20 miles of speed limit exceeding fun and she rode like new, would never guess she'd done 67,000 miles.
