anyone any ideas on an erratic fuel gauge reading, skips from full to half and then back to full this is with the tank full ,and the countdown on low fuel which normally reads about 70 km when it comes on gave a reading of 150km the bike either has a problem or great fuel economy all of a sudden.

the fuel gauges are known to be less than accurate, and in general jump from full to 1/4 after about 150km, then are slow to move again until the light comes on telling you that you have 70-80km left.
The 08 model were suppose to be better. The fact that yours goes up and down in unusual, only fix I've heard of is tank replacement. Most of us just get use to using the trip meter at every fill up.

I have this bike since 04 and I would be used to its normal operation but it has started to read even worse this happened before and something was changed under warrenty but I cannot remember if it was the gauge or the sender unit.

Mine's an '06.
Sometimes it flicks between 1/2 and Full even though it might have only done 20 or 30 miles since a fill-up. I just ignore the whole thing and fill up when the trip is somewhere between 180 and 200.
