So, I warm the engine, take the bash plate off, and take the new filter my local swiss dealer charged me the eqivilent of 14 quid out of the box ...

Then it dawned on me ... "how the f*** do you get the oil filter out that BMW have kindly shielded and recessed" ... no doubt you have to buy a specific tool ....

Do Halfords do one, or is it a BMW special item ?

Thanks

You need the tool - they are not special - any decent motorshop should provide - just take the new filter in with you for fit.

Or has been suggested before, you can bodge it by hammering a screwdriver through the old one as a "handle" and unscrewing.

Earlier reply from moi. This is for the 1150, can't vouch for A N OTHER.

OK fellow tossers. Piece of info. for YOU.
The correct oil filter tool is 76AF x 14 flats, this is assuming that all BMW oil filters are the same as the one supplied to be by Harolds father.

FFS all i asked for was to find out if there were any hidden nasties.

The grumpy cnut forum is found elsewhere.

Ye I had that problem. Went to change filter couldn't get a chain or large grips on it like I do with car had already started draining the oil so hammered scredriver in only for it to rip it to pieces as it was so tight :spitfire So lucky to get away with it, will get tool before I do it again :nono

Sorry , twas a 1150 ADV ....

I'm not too sure how you would puncture it with a screwdriver ... you could only do this in the end, then how are you going to get purchase to turn it ....
Also slightly wary of toght it is screwed in!

Getting the bash plate back on was a bitch because of the poor alignment of the engine bars ... Cheers BMW !

Halfords sell the tool, its, as previously mentioned, 76 mm across. Mine cost about £4.99 2 years ago.
