So the 2017 MY engine is EU4 with a OBD lamp on the dash to say if the motor is not performing cleanly. It could be electrically locked down like the latest BMW cars? - might be the end of remapping methinks :rob

Don't worry , cars have had this for many years, the re mapping won't be an issue they just dial stuff out and alter parameters , the future mot testing can be an issue ,, bikes will likely be subjected to exhaust emission testing in the future,
euro 5 was when more significant consequences like limp home were built in by legislation, on new stuff an electric coolant secondary pump can cause limp home to cut in,,
fair point though, bikes will be more reliant on diagnostic equipment , it would be interesting to see if they go to the standard OBD socket which may allow generic code readers of the P codes and stuff,,

Modern ecu;s are not locked, they are security protected.

Can still be tuned by the boot mode method, which involves opening the ecu and making a direct connection, so slightly more work than through the diagnostic socket.
