Here's a ride report from a little jaunt a couple of weeks ago. Grab yourself a cuppa, it's going to be a bit of a long one (sorry)

Day 1: Le Harve to Nevers

We took the LD Lines overnight ferry from Portsmouth to Le Harve. Also on the ferry was John McGuiness and Michael Rutter on their way to the Bol d’ Or at Magny Cours. After a quick chat with John I wished him luck with the race and disembarked.
In France the roads were damp but drying and there wasn’t any water falling from the sky (so far, so good). After a stop for lunch at Orleans, we avoided the dual carriageways and made good progress to Nevers, heading south to avoid the weather that had been plaguing Britain and Northern France all year.

Day 2: Nevers to Le Pouzin

The first stop of the day was Magny Cours Circuit. I’ve got lots of photos of myself and bikes here over the years, so this stop was somewhat of a tradition. The scenery started to get better and the roads more enjoyable. I had mistakenly set the sat nav to navigate the most direct route, rather than the fastest. As it turned out, this was a good thing as we found ourselves in the middle of some great scenery on deserted country lanes.

Day 3: Le Pouzin to Digne

As each mile passed the hills and mountains got bigger and the scenery more impressive. The temperature also rose considerably, so out came the liners from our bike gear.

Day 4: Digne to Cuneo

Passing over the mountain from France into Italy we met some cyclists coming the other way. They informed us that the pass over the mountain was closed and there was still too much snow to get through. We continued ahead regardless, with the intention of just going for a quick look at the scenery and then turning back. As it turned out, the pass was open and the roads were dry and clear.
In Cuneo we stayed at the Best Western in the Town Square. The service could not have been better and we found the Italians we came across to be very helpful and friendly (the pizza was good too!).

Day 5: Cuneo to Reggio Emilia via Genoa & La Spezia

This part of the journey wasn’t the most enjoyable mainly to the Italian traffic. It was like being back in the UK. Congestion and bad roads.

Day 6: Reggio Emilia to Cattolica

Our intention from here was to head North towards Austria. However, due to the weather over the Alps we decided to head South East towards the sun and pay a visit to a little village called Tavullia. Apparently, some famous Italian motorcycle racer lives here but I can’t remember his name!

Day 7: Cattolica to Ora

Another damp day but the weather was due to improve tomorrow. We headed North so we could be in the area of the Stelvio Pass the following day.

Day 8: Ora to Imst

The day looked promising. Although the roads were still damp from the day before, the rain had stopped and it looked like it might be a clear day.
We headed off to find the Stelvio Pass only to find that it was closed due to snow. I’ll have to come back this way in the future when it’s open.

Day 9: Imst to Innsbruck via Neuschwanstein Castle.

No visit to this part of the world would be complete without a visit to the Neuschwanstein Castle. You may recognise it from the classic film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Day 10: Innsbruck to Wil

Lovely biking roads and picture postcard scenery.

Day 11: Wil to Crailsheim

Out of expensive Switzerland and into a more affordable Germany. The roads were better too.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/38923974@N07/8683757556/" title="Day 11: Wil to Crailsheim (Germany) by Buster Lung, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8402/8683757556_f998168aae_n.jpg" width="240" height="320" alt="Day 11: Wil to Crailsheim (Germany)"></a>

Day 12: Crailsheim to Sinsheim and a day at the Auto & Technik Museum.

We saw signs for the Auto and Technik Museum and thought we’d stop. I’m glad we did. This place had exhibits ranging from sewing machines to Concord.
It’s because of this museum we didn’t do many miles. A visit to this place is definitely an all day affair. Highly recommended.

Day 13: Sinsheim to Koenigswater

North into the Rhine Valley. (It rained)

Day 14: Koenigswinter to Bielefeld

We continued towards Northern Germany and to the place where I grew up. I hadn’t been there since the late seventies.
The first stop was the Mohne Dam, made famous by the Dambusters raid of WW2. From there we headed to Detmold and quick visit see an old friend (the statue of Herman the German).

Day 15: Bielefeld to Porta Westfalica via a trip down memory lane

The next day we went to see my old flat and some of the sights of my childhood. The street in the first photo is where I learnt to ride a push bike. Over thirty years later, still on a bike and still wobbly!
From there we went to the Army camp where both my parents were stationed and I used to play on tanks and watch helicopters on the airfield. The Cold War is well and truly over and it’s no longer an Army camp.

Day 16: Porta Westfalica to Arnhem (Netherlands)

I hadn’t been to Arhem since 1990 and I wanted to revisit the Airborne Museum and pay my respects at one of the military cemeteries from Operation Market Garden.
As we entered Arnhem, it had completely slipped my mind that the Dutch people were getting a new king today. We were met be a sea of orange and thousands of people celebrating. Street parties and bunting were everywhere.

Day 19: Around Normandy

The ferry was booked and we had a couple of days to explore the Normandy area, visiting battlefields, museums and paying our respects at the Military Cemetery in Bayeux. I’ve been to this area a few times on a bike and it always seems to be at the end of a trip and feels rushed.
We met a couple of British BMW riders that had been down to the Pyrenees. The weather hadn’t been to special to them either.

Day 20: Caen to Cherbourg and home.

More WW2 sites and the boring ferry journey home from Cherbourg to Poole.
Looking forward to my next boring ferry journey to Le Mans Moto GP. Not long to wait!

Nice report,what was total costs,mileage?

Thanks.

Unfortunately I didn't record the mileage. I will next time if I remember.

Regarding the costs, we mostly tried to stay in the cheaper hotels/motels.
Typically France was the cheapest. We usually use 'Hotel B&B' or 'Budget Ibis' as they all have en-suite and are about 40 euros per room.

The most expensive place was Switzerland. For one night in a hotel, two evening meals and a couple of drinks, it cost us £167.00 (British pounds).

The privately run hotels in most other countries came to about 60 - 80 euros per night. I'm sure we could have done it a lot cheaper if we'd done our research. Not doing any research was part of the fun though.
