Here's a ride report from a little jaunt a couple of weeks ago. Grab yourself a cuppa, it's going to be a bit of a long one (sorry)
Day 1: Le Harve to Nevers
We took the LD Lines overnight ferry from Portsmouth to Le Harve. Also on the ferry was John McGuiness and Michael Rutter on their way to the Bol d’ Or at Magny Cours. After a quick chat with John I wished him luck with the race and disembarked.
In France the roads were damp but drying and there wasn’t any water falling from the sky (so far, so good). After a stop for lunch at Orleans, we avoided the dual carriageways and made good progress to Nevers, heading south to avoid the weather that had been plaguing Britain and Northern France all year.

Day 2: Nevers to Le Pouzin
The first stop of the day was Magny Cours Circuit. I’ve got lots of photos of myself and bikes here over the years, so this stop was somewhat of a tradition. The scenery started to get better and the roads more enjoyable. I had mistakenly set the sat nav to navigate the most direct route, rather than the fastest. As it turned out, this was a good thing as we found ourselves in the middle of some great scenery on deserted country lanes.

Day 3: Le Pouzin to Digne
As each mile passed the hills and mountains got bigger and the scenery more impressive. The temperature also rose considerably, so out came the liners from our bike gear.

Day 4: Digne to Cuneo
Passing over the mountain from France into Italy we met some cyclists coming the other way. They informed us that the pass over the mountain was closed and there was still too much snow to get through. We continued ahead regardless, with the intention of just going for a quick look at the scenery and then turning back. As it turned out, the pass was open and the roads were dry and clear.
In Cuneo we stayed at the Best Western in the Town Square. The service could not have been better and we found the Italians we came across to be very helpful and friendly (the pizza was good too!).

Day 5: Cuneo to Reggio Emilia via Genoa & La Spezia
This part of the journey wasn’t the most enjoyable mainly to the Italian traffic. It was like being back in the UK. Congestion and bad roads.

Day 6: Reggio Emilia to Cattolica
Our intention from here was to head North towards Austria. However, due to the weather over the Alps we decided to head South East towards the sun and pay a visit to a little village called Tavullia. Apparently, some famous Italian motorcycle racer lives here but I can’t remember his name!

Day 7: Cattolica to Ora
Another damp day but the weather was due to improve tomorrow. We headed North so we could be in the area of the Stelvio Pass the following day.
