stuck in spain with ews warning light on which means the bike want start i have an idea it is the ignition antenna does anyone have a very quick solution as i am in the shit by the way im with woody what we need is a part number and advice on fitting it thanks dan

I can't remember if you need to undo anything to swap the old and new antennas connector plugs over :blast

You will need a set of security Torx bits/wrench to undo the tiny screws that hold the anti-tamper cover that hides the wiring plug. You will also need to drill out or chisel the shear-headed bolts that secure the ignition switch in order to fit the replacement part.

An easier roadside fix is to expose the wiring plug with a security torx bit, swap the wiring connector from the failed unit into the new unit, then tape your spare plastic wallet key inside the new ring antenna and tape the whole assembly to the handlebars. You can then use your original metal key to start the bike via the ignition switch. For this reason when doing a long trip, I carry a roll of tape and the plastic wallet key with my spare EWS antenna and torx tools in my toolkit (along with a home made fuel pump controller bypass cable).

Hi

Not sure if you both have BMWs, but if you do, and you're desparate to move the bikes to a dealer, you can start the good bike, leave it running and swap the antenna to the "bad" bike to start that. (The antenna is only used during initial start up.)

If you don't want to remove the antenna from the good bike, you might be able to cobble together wires from the bad antenna connector to the good antenna still on the good bike. For this you'd need two keys - one for the ignition and one to put over the antenna. The wires might cause an electrical pick-up problem here and so it might not work. (You can disconnect the wires when you're started!)

Of course you could do this for the rest of your trip if the alternative is lose several days.

good luck.

PS - If you only have one key, I think you can do as above, but sit the new antenna directly over the old one around the ignition - I managed to get this to work once when testing a replacement antenna.

Hi, if any help, GSEddie and I will be in southern Spain, on way back from Morocco, on Friday afternoon, and have a spare, on loan from Edventure of this parish.

As for 1200 reliability, we've hammered these 3 1200s around Morocco for the last 10 days, on and off road, and we have had a lot of maintaining to do.....well actually, the only thing we have done so far is clean the contacts on GSEddies rear bulb.

So if we can help out Dan and Woody, let us know on here....

many thanks guys. it wasnt the ring antannea in the end it was a section of the wiring loom to the side of the battery hposing which had rubbed through on the metal lug  heading back to santander in the morning with a spare ring antaneea if anyones stuck :thumb2
