Hi all,

I'm thinking of investing in an ex police R1200RT for the 180 mile round trip to work.

The 1 thing holding me back is the pannier size. Can anyone tell me the dimensions of the police spec document box type panniers on these? I need to squeeze my work laptop and some assorted small IT bits and bobs into them.

Cheers in advance,

Bob

There are loads of ex plod bikes on eBay. Few have photos with the slim panniers open but they might give you a rough idea. If u ask one of the sellers they'll probably tell u

I'll go out and measure mine tomorrow morning. BTW the radio box will take a medium sized computer backpack

I can't give you the dimensions, but I carried a work Sony lap-top, not a small screen, in a job bike for a number of years, & it fits the Police panniers easier than in the R1200RT civvie panniers, which are a squeeze.

The RT's the Met use don't have the normal system panniers and open from the top. Do you know if these are the type you need the dimensions for? If so and no one else has them I can get them for you. If it these type they will certainly take a 15" laptop and probably a 17" to.

Spot on, thank you! Forgot about the radio box...!

Sounds about right. Mine is a 17" HP, bit they're all roughly the same size.

That's the ones I mean! Thanks :-)

If it helps Bob, I've measured the overall dimensions of the lap-top I used to carry in the above illustrated panniers. 17" X 14", & was an easy fit. Hope that helps.

OK

The panniers are not exactly cuboid so the dimensions are:-
max internal dimensions 19long*14deep*6wide
max working dimensions for solid oblong item are 14*13*4ins

The radio box will accept a rucksack upto 16*12*7ins

nb. a pannier can quickly and easily be substituted with a custom case ie Pelicase. I have carried RT wheels, HiFi sets etc fixed to the external tubular crash bars

nb as per the photo a cutout in the baseplate provides lots of storage for tools etc

nb I have one spare custom police briefcase to fit the panniers

ps apologies for the photo orientation

May I hijack the thread with two questions, please

1, What is the width across the crash bars - I assume that they are slightly wider than the panniers ?

2, Did you cut the opening in the base plate - could the opening be enlarged, and a removable blanking plate be used to separate the upper and lower sections ?

Thanks

Chopps
