Exchanging my 550

Sadly after four years of being used almost every day over many thousands of miles, my 550 has called it a day.
The touch screen had stopped responding, so a new one was bought to replace it, but on taking it apart I found that the hard buttons were on the verge of falling out.. plus I managed to damage a tiny cable retention clip

So a call to Garmin regarding repairs, but it seems they won't actually repair mine but will send a replacement refurbished unit for £112, I can live with that.

However, it also seems that they'll send me a 660 because the 550 is "So Popular" there are non around... (there's a moral there somewhere).

So.. my (rather long winded) question is. Has anyone gone from a 550 to a 660 and is the 660 as good?

It would be nice if it was better.... (though my 550 was excellent)

Depends if your going to listen to music and make phone calls, also depends if your getting a 660 and the mounting kit as that's going to cost a bit if you don't.

I loved my 550, but it's not pocket friendly and the car kit was a pain. The 660 has the speaker in it. Music is great if your using Bluetooth as it's A2DP high quality stereo and the phone works very well (no txt messages like others, but this is good).

Like the 550 it runs out of memory if you ask it to navigate across France on back roads, it needs to take 'bites' at the route, but it is better.

However I've had software issues and Garmin have just sent my third device, but all were free other than postage.

Were a viable other solution available, I have no loyalty to Garmin due to the cost and buggy nature of the 660 (and 550 on occasion) and would use my Iphone in a waterproof case if it worked with gloves

All of the current version of City Nav Europe will fit onto the 660, it wont onto the 550.

660 is a generation later and is current. If the 550 is still a current model, in production terms, it'll be the first to be discontinued and have support removed.

I had mine exchanged for a 660 under the same deal. Everything comes in the box, and it is a great step forward. I am very pleased with the 660.

Thanks, this is encouraging.

I never bothered too much with the music, and not at all with the Telephone on my 550. Nice to hear that all of the maps will fit, though not a problem on the 550 with an SD card to take the extra..

Well the same thing happened to me , just after I signed up to life time updates for the 550 !!. Anyway I just sent my second 660 back cos its got problems. Thats two in three weeks. First one was so dark that you could not see anything, I was asked to take a photo and send it to Garmin for them to come up with a solution; I explained that it was quicker for the guy to look at one that was not turned which hit the spot and resulted in me sending it back and they sent me one that you could see the screen on but the touch screen did not work. So I rang Dave in Garmin (chap who wanted the photoraph) and he said send it back, no problem I said you pay for it, so they sent me a UPS voucher. Looking forward to the next one. Like many of us travellers I have had Garmin stuff for many years, I still have my Street Pilot 11 which works fine but a bit slow, the 660 is supposed to be designed by bikers for bikers, looking at the problems we are all having I think TomTom or maps and compass is the way to go. Rant over. Dave if you are reading this can I have my 550 back please instead ?
