I'm looking to fit a 21 front and 18 rear to the wifes GS, but Exel only list a 2.15 rear and I think the OE is 2.50 but I have seen pictures of F650's with these rims. I don't know a thing about wheel building :( can anybody point me in the right direction I'm going round in circles trying to find info.

Cheers
Pete

If you fit an 18" rim to the rear you will limit the amount of chain adjustment available. You probably know this but I thought I'd mention it.

Touratw*t sell the wheel kit but it is stupidly expensive. However, they use Excell rims so they must be available. If they are slightly skinnier it won't be a problem, a 130 tyre should still fit on safely :thumb

Not a problem if you use a quality chain, if you were really concerned about the reduction in chain adjustment you could easily have the swing arm extended.

I looked into doing this on mine so I could run trials tyres for LDT's.
Apart from the chain adj. issue I didn't think there would be much clearance between tyre and swing arm. As Timorolga says the dakar bikes have a longer swing arm. It is v hard to find an excel rim with the correct drillings.
That maybe why the TT ones are so expensive, I guess they are drilled to suit.
Talon built my Excels onto the std wheels and even they had to 'improvise' to get the rear (17") to lace up!! They used a super moto rim as the closest match and had to bend some of the spokes to fit. Never had problems with loosening or snapping so it has been fine.

Cheers guys, looking like I need to find a secondhand Dakar swinger as well then. I can't live with a small amount of chain adjustment, the bike is going to India and back, 20K so I'll need all we can get.

Why not try 17" Pirelli MT21's. I use em now and they have got me through some pretty sh1tty muddy stuff. Not as good as Mich S12's etc but a good halfway house and last much better than full on off road tyres:thumb
That extra 1" ain't all it's cracked up to be............or is it :augie:augie:augie

The standard rims aren't as tough as excells, but they'll be fine unless you are fast and unlucky. I've dinged the front a bit, but the back is fine.

I'm going with her on my X Challenge so it made sense for us to have the same hoops.

Ah ha, now it mkes sense. Would a dakar rear wheel not fit in the X challenge :nenau It'd be the easier and cheaper option:thumb

A note on the chain adjustment thing... Touratech in their installation procedure for the 18" wheels, say that you have put a die (thread cutter) on the adjustment bolts to increase the length of adjustment.

Excel also do a 18" x 2.5" rim (Touratech sells them). Tallon quoted me in the region of £200 for the relacing of the BMW rear hub to the new rim.

the ones i have seen have sizes on:
front rim j 21x1.60 dot 402 japan 8.00 90/90/21/54s
rear rim j 18xmt2.50 dot 402 japan 1 98 140/80/70r

perhaps the rear is a special, thats why touratech as so expensive:D

Nope, not special at all, a number of other bikes use the 2.5 inch width rims. I think the single cylinder KTM adventures are amongst them.

£100 was for the rim, £45 for the labour and the rest for stainless steel nipples (oo-err) and the longer than OEM spokes. Not sure of the heavy duty bit though. All I had to do was send the whole OEM wheel to them so they can take the off-sets etc
