Asked my dealer on Saturday,.. he said there's no options on exhausts... no header options.

From the R Series Model brochure January 2004

Chrome Manifold (I guess this is what we are talking about) option 340 POA (so presumably expensive?)

Zorsts

Here, chromed pipes are €95 when ordered with a new GS12.

Does anyone have any dirty pictures of this option?

Bonjour.

I've found a combination of Solvol Autosol paste used with 400 grade wet & dry gets the pipes by to their original colour. You can cut the abrasive paper into strips and work around the pipe. Finish off with just the paste and a cloth for the final shine.

It's a waste of time though, because the discolouration soon returns. Still, it's better than watching reality shows on the TV!

Thanks for the link. Great pics! Those pipes are indeed quite shiny and chrome-like in appearance. When I look here http://www.bmwmotorcycles.com/machine/models/model.jsp?model=r1200gs I can't find any exhaust options at all. Do any of the other factory sites show this option?

http://www.bmw-motorrad.co.uk/de/de/products/equipment/pdf/pl_end_r1200gs.pdf

The pdf is in german. But it clearly states out the chrome option.
(Krümmer verchromt SA-Nr. 340 90,00€)

To remove the discoloring on the pipes use Simichrome- made by Happich of Germany. It works the best of anything available...

I have a r1200gs and this product will remove entirely the brown/blue color that is a result of heating of the pipes...

p.s.- simichrome has been around for at least 40yrs... you may have a hard time finding the product as it contains ammonia and a few other chemicals that the enviorionalists don't endorse...

It's available online- do a web search and you will find it.

Alloy wheels & knobbly tyres - an unusual combination - did you not consider spoked wheels for the extra strength off road?

Mike:confused:

No, I didn't. The spoked wheels are too heavy.

But that was not a good decision! Look what happened when I hit a 15 cm stone in 110 km/h. Front tire pressure was 1.6 bar.

As you've discovered to your cost, alloy wheels may be light, but they're also made of caramel. The advantage of spoked wheels is their strength - hence my original question...

Eh? That's a damn big stone to be hitting at speed. I'd expect damage.

Yeah, Emoto, whatever. Spoked wheels are stronger than alloys - except on your perfect wonderbike...

Ouch!
That's not nice.... I'm glad I'm spending the £240 (or what it is) on my spoked wheels...

What's the repair bill or new wheel going to cost you?

Repair cost 60 EUR. They used an hydraulic press to reshape the wheel.

So, Mr. O, are you saying that hitting a 15cm stone with spoked wheels will cause no damage?

We all know that they're stronger than alloy. And heavier.

Back to the blue thing when i was a boy it was a big thing to blue your pipes in fact the further down the bluing was the better:eek because it was the considered wisdom that the bluer your pipes were the faster you must have been riding :D:eek well thats what we all thought back then.:green gri

Then I'm a pussy because my bike has super shiny header pipes which take many tubes of Autosol and buckets of elbow-grease to keep like it.

It might p*ss other people off but that's the way I like it. So when I put my order in for my GS12 it'll definitely have the chrome headers.

.

I had chrome on my GSA - now nice and flat brown. Never polised them:eek:

Do you wear sandles?:comfort

Thanks.think i will get them ordered, thought they would cost more.
