I have recently had a long trip then garaged the bike. Its been started and had short runs around town without problems since then. Last week however the battery went low and I moved the tank to connect the cables to a smart charger, replaced the tank and plugged the charger in. Later when trying to start the bike it struggled to hold the revs with the choke full on and kept cutting out. Today I started it and stood revving it, holding the revs up until it warmed up. It was coughing and backfired a few times. I suddenly could smell burning rubber. When I looked at the back tyre I noticed that the exhaust box was beyond red hot but bright orange and the heat was melting the rear tyre. This bike was running fine when parked. Anyone had a similar problem. I can normally fix everything, but I'm not sure where to start with this. Ideas anyone.

Jake.

Throttle cables not seated properly. very common

Just tried that

Hi Guys, Just went out and checked and sure enough the cable was offset. I replaced this and just ran the bike up and down the road. The exhaust sounds like a hog and the exhaust box was glowing red in the dark. The cable appears to be smooth running now but the problem still there!!!! Any other ideas?

Hi Jake
Sounds like a restiction in the silencer......... collapsed, displaced baffle? Although you didn't mention what bike you have.:nenau
Does the engine sound choked when you rev it? I would take the silencer off and check the flow, then run the bike with out it on just to test the engine response, your problems may not be related!

Just a thought........ has any one pushed you a spud ( king Edward ETC ) up the silencer??????

Good luck GSRon

STill sick

Thanks GSRON, i'll take the pipe apart. Its an 1150gs. I just went and started it and its spitting and backfiring. Strange because it was fine when parked. !!!!!!!!! Just had a thought when I took the tank off i lost the nut to the holding bolt and laid the bike down to try and retrieve it as it that had gone deep inside the looms and behind the abs unit. I gave the bike a shake while on its side. although I didn't retrieve the nut perhaps I shook a baffle loose. I will check it out and report back to let everyone know if the problem was mechanical or if it was self inflicted by a pillock.

You have checked the cable on both side haven't you ??

And check that both throttles are closed ( throttle against the return stop on both sides).

The fact that your exhaust is glowing points to a throttle inbalance, not an internal exhaust problem.

Their out

Steptoe, I think you may have it. I have checked both throttle cables and both were seated correctly, however I also checked the play in each cable and the right cable when on the bike travels at least a cm less than the left. I am going to look up how to alter these now and will let you know my result, cheers jake.

Problem solved

Finally got it. The cable was out of its housing, however having checked both sides at the rockers all appeared ok. It was only when I began to look deeper that I discovered that the cable on the right hand side (sitting on the bike) had came out of its housing underneath the abs box. I wasn't aware the point was also susceptible to this problem. Thanks for all your help. Hope this helps everyone interested.
