Exhaust Repacking

Hi again!
My bike is loud, very loud.
During the last test is was up to 108db so presumably the packing has gone from the silencer.
I found a good guy for stainless welding at a reasonable price.
I will cut it open and repack but does anyone have any experience with the best product?
I see millions on eBay but don’t want to go through all the hassle of doing this only for it to fail and fall to pieces in 1000kms.
Any advice would be highly appreciated!!!!

Hmmm !! That’s interesting because it’s super loud and that would explain a lot.
I’ll cut it open and throw something in there, pack it out and hopefully get it down a few db .
Bike runs perfect, pulls like a train and great plug colour.
Just a bit loud, I mean I kind of like it but my neighbours and the old bill are not too keen .
Is there a better packing product or are they all the same really?

Ha! No not at all.

Packing the rear silencer/tailpiece won’t cause any adverse back pressure issues will it?

I see a collector box positioned in the centre of the bike advertised for sale sometimes but mine has never had one. Is that usually the silencer?

Like I kind of say, I just need a bit of advice really …..

I’m thinking that if I pack this tail section the back pressure will go up and may cause some mixture problems.
I imagine it’ll run lean?

The centre (missing) section does a lot of silencing. Your rear portion (one could hardly call it a silencer) does not look standard. Some exhaust manufacturers supply inserts to make the noise tolerable. These usually are in the form of baffles. Or you could insert a tube with holes in it and pack around it somehow.

Bottom line is it is noisy because whoever put it on there wanted it noisy so the maker of the system made it noisy. No standard parts will quieten it down unless you buy a full standard set up. Kerrching.

I’ll cut it open, wrap a baffle pipe and weld it in.
I’m guessing it’ll need a little bit of mixture adjustment (potentially) but let’s see.
108db was on tickover at the ITV (Spanish MOT) station, don’t have any idea what it is when I’m blasting down the Spanish mountain passes.
You never know, a bit of extra back pressure might make it smoother on tickover . Lets see. Thank you.

That’s good to hear, I do enjoy mucking around with the bikes but I bloody hate re jetting and I’m not sure if there are any dyno guys I’d trust in Spain!!!
End of the month I’ll be back home, I’ll rebuild the gearbox and do some other jobs I’ve been meaning to do for ages, whip the tail piece off and have a few hours messing around with that. Take it to my stainless welding guy (who I do actually trust!!) and get it all welded up. Bit of bbq paint and have a good run and see how it goes. I’ll report back!!!!

Think if you increase the backpressure it runs rich ?

You know what, actually that makes sense. Back pressure will slow the flow, that would leave more unburned gasses/fuel air up front.
I know one thing for sure, after I pack the (non) rear silencer I’ll soon know .

Looking at the ‘ silencer’ I’d say that an easier solution would be to fit what’s called a db killer in the end tube. You can find them in all sorts of shapes and sizes on line. Basically a fluted tube that is secured by a screw or bolt through one side of the end wall/pipe. This will tone down the bark without killing the power. Slight increased back pressure might even help without the centre collector box.

This sounds like a simple and cheap option before I start messing around and cutting/welding.

This was a great idea and sorted the bike right out! I can hear the air intake now it’s so quiet . Went from 129db to about 85.
I only had a quick ride but it didn’t feel any different performance wise.
Really appreciate that advice.
