Hi. Can anyone recommend an engineer to sleeve or weld and recut an airhead exhaust thread? I did a search, but couldn't find any recent names/services. It's an R65LS, 1983. I'm in the North East/Teesside area. Thanks.

Thanks. I contacted Scrimminger. They don't do them anymore, and the guy who had been doing them for them recently retired. He did mention the name Roger Burnett in Holmfirth, but I couldn't find anyone online by that name.
I contacted Motorworks and they have someone who does them.

I bought a second hand head from Motorworks where they had "repaired" the thread. It was an utterly shite job.

Thanks. That'll be who he meant. It probably makes sense to get the valves/guides and seats checked over while I'm at it. I filled the exhaust port with fuel and there's a tiny bit of seepage past the valve. And so a quick service and clean up escalates into more work and expense....

Either you posted a link to that or someone else did quite a while ago. I was impressed then and I’m still impressed now :bow

I’ve no doubt there are a few companies offering similar repairs some good and some bad. My Norton had a shit repair done on it before I bought the bike so I got Seagers to do it after being told by a friend that they were trustworthy and it was well worth the cost.

In the past I have machined the old exhaust stub down and threaded aluminium tube so that it is a shrink fit onto the stub then Tig welded the new sleeve to the stub on the inside so that the repair is not visible.
It has been necessary to run a thread chaser down the finished job as it ends up a couple of thou oversize due to the shrink fit.
This is just another way of doing them.

BLR Engineering, Wallington south London - they fit a Phosphorous Bronze insert so you’ll never have any problems in the future. They’ve been repairing Bmw exhaust threads for more than 40 years.

I believe he has retired. Don't know what happened to his workshop.
