Explorer is selling well!!

Wow, great thread. Nothing like a good bit of mutual slagging ;)

I test rode the Exp when it came out and thought it was a fine machine.

In 10 years on an 1150 I never ventured further than a gravel car park. I liked the GS because it was such a good road bike and I thought the Exp was also an excellent road bike. That engine is fantastic and off-road ability is not something I'd be considering. I'd guess that anyone swapping a GS for an Exp isn't likely to take it seriously off-road and anyone who would take it off-road probably wouldn't get rid of their GSs in the first place.

Each to their own, but carry on with the slagging as it is entertaining :D

Well I bought one after 5 years on a GS, I buy them as I like the style, big and tall with plenty of leg room as 34'' inside leg.

Fancied a change, superb engine.

I once went up a dirt track on the GS, and I think so far on the explorer I have been across a gravel car park, does this count as adventure riding? or have I bought the wrong bike?

the GS doesn't look like anything else, and neither does the RT though, does it? so it can be done, but not by triumph apparently. a company whose entire design philosophy from day one seems to be taking others ideas and sticking a union jack* on them :nenau

*yes, i know

And don't forget the Triumph motto "Go Your Own Way" :augie

err pipe calling kettle..........

dont think bmw came up with the boxer engine...did they

oh yes and me thinks suzuki first came out with the beak(dr big)

GS is selling well as well.Doesn't matter to me if the Explorer sales are more or less .. beginning to think this thread has done its course :rob

You forgot to mention the wheel :blast

More key the Hossack Suspension (Bavarian name = Duolever)

http://www.hossack-design.co.uk/

Was a bit surprised to read that he had put his suspension system on a Triumph 900 at one point as well.

That suspension system and it's derivatives are probably the best single technical item on a BMW. Yes The Boxer engine, ABS (non-servo), ESA etc are nice but in reality closely match what other manufacturers have.

The concept of the boxer engine was patented in 1896 by engineer Karl Benz.

DR Big : 1988

R1100GS : 1993

But the early R80GS (early 80s?) had a rather large mudguard that could be seen to be the forerunner of the beak.

The original beak

Doesn't count as it was a mudguard and not a beak. ;)

pre dates the lot :D

Anybody got one?

Anybody got the new explorer and would like to trial a rear crud for me? I`d buy one if i wasn`t saving up for the new 1250..........

Conditions:

1. Take lots of photo`s and send them to me (I love all my babies).
2. You get to keep the rear crud if you want it (it may look good enough to keep).

For those who don`t know me I tend to make the odd modest farkle for us GS boys. Its not an entirely commercial venture as some kindly folk may point out so please don`t think its an elaborate scam - just a drunk fool who charges a fair price for hand finished gear which he thinks a lot of :D

Anyone interested them please PM me!

Regards,

mark

Can read fine thanks, i'm refering to the op's post not his link to registration statisitics but there you go :comfort:augie i'll try to be more precise in future if it concerns you:bow
..

No you didn't read it properly because in his OP he is quoting the registration figures but stating that they are sales figures, which they are not .;)

It is interesting to see how people feel it necessary to justify their own buying decisions to other people, especially since its such a personal thing and far more complicated than reading technical specs and sales figures. I'm one of those people criticised for buying a 1200GSA because I don't take it off road and never had any intention of doing so. For me its about comfort - at my height it was the only bike I test drove where I didn't get knee cramp or back pain and I can ride it all day long with a smile on my face. Its my money that I work hard for so I will buy what suits me and not what other's assume is a better bike - for me. When it was first mooted, I had hoped the Triumph would have been a better alternative to a GSA (for me) however, it isn't. That's not saying its a bad bike, its just not for me this time around. If they make a version with more ride height I may become interested again.
