I want to transfer my Contacts and some other bits from my old laptop to my new one. My old computer has Office for XP, my new one has Office 2003.

I have a remote HDD which I plan on using for the job. The problem is that I can't seem to export the data in a format that my new computer will recognise.

Can anyone give me a step by step idiot's guide to how to do this please?

Cheers

Mike:)

I don't have Office 2003 handy to check the exported file, but...

File/Import and Export
Export to a File
Personal Folder File (may need to try other formats if the Personal Folder File won't import later)
Select the Contacts folder
Save to your remote HDD (or wherever)

First off, if you've got an external hard drive, I'd copy your .pst files etc from the equivalent of C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook - that'll give you a basic back up.

Slipstick.com has a decent guide.

If you haven't set up the new Outlook yet, you can then just transfer the .pst etc files to the same folder on the new machine.

Otherwise, you could just export all the files you want one-by-one to to something like a CSV (Comma Seperated Values) file, and then import that to 2003.

Hi Clive - that's exactly what I've done - but can't work out how to import that into my new Outlook...

You should be able to File/Open - Personal Folders File (.pst)
then point it at the previous Exported file

When it is open in your (new) Outlook you should be able to Copy/Paste the Contact entries into the normal Contacts folder then Close the exported .pst

Sorted! Thanks - computer myopia - failed to highlight all the options I needed on the 'Import ' leg.

Many thanks Clive & Sam...
