Extended Warranty - no brainer?

I have the extended warranty this month is month 12.
I have had.FPC,Rear drive seal,engine/gearbox seal, rubber joint between swingarm and gearbox and Full ABS system.I am well a head on the deal.Plus call outs for flat battery, puncture, rear light loom failure and twice for a stuck key!

P.S I pay monthly.

Any chance

Jesus, this is very depressing.
I spent up to my max and more for a really nice bike. But after reading this Im starting to think iv bought a bag of sh1t thats going to brake down every two weeks unless I spend £350 i dont have on a warranty!

Any chance of a few of you that have R1200GSs that have had just a few or no problems.

....the best £300+ I've spent......7 days after warranty ran out. The ignition button failed amongst other things.

...this single claim paid for itself on parts alone.

Had at least 3 other claims since including Abs unit failure which is fortune and was money I didnt have.

If your minted then dont bother, if not buy it & pay it up over the 12 months.

had my 12GSA for just over 2 years, just signed up for the warranty because I figured it was worth it, only had 2 warranty claims in the two years, one for the mirrors (the dealer told me they needed doing and the FPC again the dealer told me it had to be done).....don't worry for every bad story there's probably 5 happy stories....:thumb

dont panic mate some break some dont its the nature of machines. peeps never seem to shout from the rooftops when things are going fine:rolleyes:,as an aside a mate of mine has an 05..1200gs with around 95000miles on it . its been bounced down the road twice on diesel spills:( done two really hard trips into and around morroco . the only warranty work its ever had was a final drive at around 50000miles....and i hasten to add its still going strong the engine just gets better and better:thumb so its not all bad news:)

BMW getting richer!

oh well even tho my beasty has ..nay is reliable and only the dreaded EWS failure I have given in to the pressure of peace of mind...but now quids lighter.. decided not to have extra breakdown cover as have it already saved £27 ..
oh well here's hoping that in twelve months time I think..what a waste of money!

Best not go out on the bike then as some people insure against accidents

Both my 1200's had no warranty work, but I'd have had the extended warranty if I'd kept them long enough. And extended warranty wasn't brought in for the 1200, I took it out in 2002 for my new 1150.

How old is your bike?Have you just got it or is it 2 years old and about to need warranty?
Mate please do not be put off from using your bike to the full.Yes I have had problems but I would not want anyother machine.I sadly dont have enough spare cash to cushion myself from big bills should something go wrong.I know it could be argued that the extended warranty is dead money but for me if one takes out the breakdown rescue service, which I would have in anycase, the price of less than £1.00 a day for me is well worth it.The best part of the BMW warranty is that there is no hanging around waiting for a decision to fix or not things just get done.Yes I also have the added expense of the BMW service intervals but again for my piece of mind i feel its worth it.
I know that some people on here have had no problems at all,and others have had a multitude of them,as someone else said its a machine and one has to do that which suits one best. Its been said that not enough people sing the praises of the GS well I do but i aint gonna pretend it has no flaws.
Get yourself off on a nice long tour say to the Alps fall in love with your bike and enjoy.
I pay my warranty monthly it helps me budget.

The alternative

Ok so someone said

Has anyone asked Warranty Direct for a price.......?

So I did and typed in all the details of my 08 GS that goes out of warranty next month.

They said £233.00 for 100% cover on parts and labour. The work can be carried out at a BWM or local dealer up to a rate of £200 per hour.
BMW genuine parts would be used.

I told them I currently have breakdown and puncture repair cover. The nice lady said she would throw that in as well. they couldn't do the puncture service but Ive never had one so Im not bothered.

I think I can get them down to £200 with a bit of haggling. :pullface

Extened warranty

I think the big factors obviously are the mileage on the bike, how many you intend to do annually and has it always been serviced by the same dealer(or at least a BMW dealer.)

really?

Im not sure thats the case.

I told them the bike had done 11,200 which it has and was about to get serviced. They were not bothered about the mileage i would do. They said there quote would go up at 60,000 miles but I didn't ask what it would go up to.

They did not specify how the bike had to be serviced but as long as its serviced by a competent dealer BMW or otherwise then thats all thats needed.

Are these extended warranties worldwide? My warranty runs out pretty much the day I fly the bike over to Buenos Aries and spend 9 months going through South America upto Alaska? I kinda know that no one is going to fly over and fix a puncture for me but if something serious like the final fdrive goes it would be nice to know its covered if I can fins a BMW dealer.
I did ask at Ocean but they didnt know?

Just as well I did!

Just had the 18k service and need a third set of front discs. That's more or less paid for the warranty I should think!:clap

Why am I happy? I shouldn't have had to pay £300+ to get cover on something that no other manufacturer has problems with....:banghead:

But hey, they fitted another FPC free (and this one was working OK!) but they wouldn't let me have the old one as a spare as they reckoned without it they couldn't reclaim from BMW.:nenau
