Recently there has been a discussion about the BMW Extended Warranty and a change that allows bikes to be serviced at any VAT registered garage as long as BMW original parts are used.

Search as I might I can't find said discussion but more importantly I've just been 'invited' to extend my warranty as the GSA reaches the two year mark and the policy still says:

1. When servicing your motorcycle, failure to comply with the service schedule recommended by BMW may invalidate this warranty. All service and warranty work must be carried out by an Authorised BMW Dealer or BMW Service Authorised Workshop using only Genuine BMW Parts. Your BMW Service Booklet should be stamped, dated and detailed with the correct mileage at the time of service by the servicing dealer.

Does anyone have any further update/clarification?

Cheers,

Mike

I think this might be the thread you are looking for....

And I'd like to repeat my comments about Warranty Direct (post #23).

Hi JKW,

Thanks, you hit the post right on the head! The problem I see with Warranty Direct is the scope of their exclusions. For example - I asked them about the Electronic Suspension gadgets and whether it would be covered under the policy or not. They weren't sure and resorted to the policy statement 'if it ain't mentioned it ain't covered'. Same for the on board computer gubins.

I may be wrong but all I could see was huge expanses of grey.

BTW - I'm an ex Bradford lad born on Bolton Road

?... Electronic Suspension gadgets....
That's what you get for having a complicated bike :blast. However, it might be worth digging a bit further on that one as they can be so much better value, especially as there is no question that they allow independent servicing and work.

Yes - but you evidently escaped - I grew up in the Lakes and got dragged here by SWMBO

FWIW, companies like warranty direct will wriggle like anything to get out of a claim. They have what's called a burn rate and when you hit that fugure, you can whistle dixie because the old wear and tear comes out:blast

Stick with the BMW warranty if you are at all concerned:thumb

As it plainly states in the policy TC's.

Extended warranty requires main dealer BMW servicing. No "if's" or "but's".

I know, I know but read the other post (link above). Something seems to be a changing; all I'm asking is if anyone has more info. This is a large and helpful community so I can't assume you're all as thick as me :aidan

google 'eu block exemption' (the wikipedia entry is good and has a list of links to the detail, the bottom line (BIS) is a UK site)
this law removes some of the previously allowed restrictive practices on aftermarket motor vehicle spares, intelectual rights and servicing, in the hope of promoting smaller business's and competition
whether anyone has used this law with BMW and won is another issue?!

EU Block exemption only applies to the 'free' manufacturer's warranty. The 'paid for' extended warranty is an aftermarket insurance policy and as such they dictate their terms and as far as Mondial is concerned , I have a recent official email stating the terms that you must use an approved BMW dealer.

Steptoe's explanation was much more straight to the point :D

I feel this has all been said (many times) before.

I "have" the BMW warranty and was told this is the case, however when I bought the bike it had the Approved Used Warranty, I have now extended the Warranty myself and I have yet to receive any documentation to check.

Last year I spent a lot of time / effort on contacting the Dealer / BMW / The Warranty company to no avail, they all just fob you off.

I did however make a claim (well three to be precise) with no problems, but still think it sucks that they are incapable of sending out the T&C's.

When they write to me later in the year, I'll extend through BMW, just for peace of mind.:thumb I've dealt with 3rd party warranty companies in the past, some are good some are bad at claims, but I figure that the best route is direct with BMW, even if costs a few more quid.:beerjug:

My warranty runs out today and I think I'm going to wing it this time. I took it out on the last bike and claimed a few times but I no longer use it for commuting and Ive only had one minor problem so far.

Going to spend the saving on a LCD TV for the bedroom and not worry about it :thumb

I'm with you on this RT just wanted to see what progress has (or hasn't) been made on the subject of non-BMW servicing.

I'll check with them in the morning and either way I'll be going with BMW.

Thanks to all for the informative and expressive responses.

Hey Rasher,

I'm not sure what it is that you didn't get that you tought you should but I've just completed the extended warranty application on line. Within minutes I received an email with my policy number and Policy Handbook.

Job done as far as I can tell and as far as I'm concerned.

Did you apply on line?

Did you apply on line?

Paid over the phone by credit card, got letter to renewand proof I paid them so not too bothered, last year I sent ages trying to get docs, but when I spoke to the dealer they could see it was covered.

Piss poor show though, especially when you make about half a dozen phone calls to the dealer, phone & E-Mail BMW and contact the Insurer and still get nowhere.

Don't know if it helps but the policy doc is downloadable form the BMW site

Ok this will be my last email on the subject as I guess there's a lot of you sick to death of the subject.

I have spoken to the BMW Extended Warranty people (Mondial) today and asked them to clarify the situation as the rumour is that as long as the bike is serviced in line with the schedule and using BMW parts the service can be performed at any VAT registered workshop but the current policy says otherwise.

They have told me that the former is now true but he policy documents have not yet been updated. They sent me the following email to confirm:

Following our recent telephone conversation, this email is to confirm that in order to keep your BMW Insured Warranty policy valid, all service work must be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications.

Proof of your service may be requested at the point of making a claim.

Mike

If what you are posting is true, then it is a change in Mondial's policy and completely changes everything previously posted.
