I am curious to see if any of you had the experience of building or buying boxes to make extra storage on a 1150gs adv , I was looking at Grant Johnson bike on picture and it does make sens to use storage foward of the cylender , I was also thinking of building a tool box somehwere, maybe under my side boxes..

Bear in mind grants boxes are made out of wood to keep the weight down!

A couple of big panniers and a top box + roll bag should be enough. Unles your travelling for a few years like Grant and Susan did. More storage will just make you carry too much (IMHO).

You can always store tools in a tool tube, under the seat. Mounting the boxes that far forward would also prove a problem engineering wise plug I really wouldn't want to put much weight in them. A more sensible option may be a set of saddle bags.

thanks for the reply, wood would not be an option for me and I agree that the less we carry the better it is but in my case 2 up for a starting 18 month trip we will need as much storage as possible, putting the tools under the seat will not work , I do carry much tools and I was thinking to make a box to attache under the side case ( not wasting precious space) , saddle bag are great and I used many of them but for a long trip they are not fonctional ( safety of gear is compromised).

Go with two large panniers and a roll bag (90Ltr) on the back with a pac-safe net on it.

Job done. Load is secure. Leave all the tools, parts etc in the panniers and clothese in the roll bag.

xtra storage

I have to agree with you , I was thinking about the same things , even if I was to have the clothe stolen that will not be a big problem.
