Is it just just me or do other owners have problems checking the oil level on their F650s'. The owners manual is clear enough and it seemed a doddle when the chap at the Dealers explained it to me when I picked the bike up, but now all I can see in the viewfinder window is a murky brown soup and for the life of me can't see the bubble.

The bike has had it 600 mile service (so the oil was changed then) and has now done 4,000 miles. This may the wrong thing to do, but until I can check it properly I am just relying on the Oil warning light.

Any tips or advice would be appreciated.

I have also just noticed that this thread has gone into the wrong section, but cant seem to change it.

Be careful, its an oil pressure warning light and not an indication of low engine oil level.

As it sounds like you need to replace the oil tank cap, when you get to the dealer have one of thier tech's go over the procedure of checking the oil level with you.

E J,

To check the level properly you ned to get the engine hot - not just warm.

Go ride it, then leave it for a good 5 mins, and then look at the level - all the murky brown soup should have disappeared and you'll see what level the oil's at (if it's still murky, give it a bit more time).

Don't be tempted to overfill it to be safe, check the level when it's cold, or put a little bit extra in :nono

I've done all those previously, so you won't be alone in that one :D

Have a look at the sight glass after you start the bike - you'll probably see the level disappear totally. Bit disconcerting at first if you're not ready for it, but it does mention it in one of the two books that comes with the bike.

Checking the oil on the 650's is a technique that they haven't really explained well in the manual.

Took me a while, and a good mechanic explaining it properly, for me to get it right. No I have no problems whatsoever with my Dakar :thumb

Any problems just give us a buzz on 02920 550 300 and ask to speak to Roger in the workshop.

Thank you boys. I'm dead chuffed that it wasnt just me being dim. I'm so glad Dennis showed me this site. So much advice and from people who've had the same problem.

Will have a crack at your suggestion this weekend and Crampie, I may well take you up on your offer if I'm still getting nowhere.

Sorry, but still don't know how to change the thread to the right forum.

Sent BHT Paul an email about the thread being in the wrong section for you.

Well done Crampie too.......we've had the occasional post from various BWM chappies, and I know several dealers look in from time to time...Simon from Prestige mentioned he does the other day when I was asking him about the 1200 he's been running in.....

But it's nice to see the offer of a phone number and help from you Peter....and I for one was smiling at the way you came out of your corner in a different thread.......I hope you stick around mate......welcome to the asylum!

:)

The procedure is as following:

Ride it until the oil is HOT.

The coolerfan must come on at least!

Let it idle for a couple of minutes, until you see the oil coming up the sight glass.

The thing is, all the oil has to drip down from the innards of the gearbox, clutch etc, to be pumped up to the tank.

It just takes a while.

But it works.

Coolerfan come on? My fan comes on rarely and not usualy at all during "normal" riding.:)

The routine, that works for me, is at the end of a ride the bike goes into the garage with a brick under the side stand. By the time I've taken my helmet off, unstrapped any bags etc the oil is about ready to read which is easiest done with a small (keyring) torch. I fing the glass hard to see in sunlight and with this little routine I should be able to spot changes. :)
