This may have been asked before so appologies up front.
My Wife has just passed her bike test 33Bhp and loves the look of the Dakar 2002 model at a very local dealers for a good price.
problem is shes short 28" inside leg which relates to a seat height around the 770/800 mark,so knowing the Dakars about 870 with the normal seat what is involved in lowering the bike and having it restricted.
cheers ian

A Dakar seat is about 870 - too tall. You could fit a standard 650gs seat but that would only lower the seat height to about 830. There is also an option of fitting Kouba rear suspension links (from USA),which would lower it about another 2 inches. However, I think that the extra expense involved in doing both options would make it prohibitive.
The best solution would be to try and locate a standard 650GS,which has a seat height of 780.There are quite a few good low mileage ones on sale at dealers,Ebay etc. Apart from the different seat heights (suspension etc),there is very little difference between the two models.

Probably be cheaper to buy a standard 650 GS and just buy the Dakar plastics if it's the colour scheme she wants.

Sorry,did not notice about 33bhp.
This is simply a matter of fitting an alternative small bracket at the lower end of the throttle cable and repositioning the cable to a different place on the plastic connector on the injector body.

Thanks very much for the info.
Lord Snooty the wife has loads of kit already but thanks for the offer.
If I needed the Dakar plastics would someone like Motobins stock them or is ebay the way.

Kouba links for lowering by 2 inches would be cheaper than looking for Dakar plastics. The Dakar plastics are a lot more expensive than the standard plastics. Dont know why this is. They appear on Ebay now and again, but always get a good price.
The Kouba links are easy to fit, and along with a lowered seat would give you a good drop in height.
Enjoy!

Restricting it to 33bhp is easy.

The bracket on the left is 33bhp (25kw) and the one on the right is the normal one.

Hope this helps.

The restrictor bracket is about £4.00 but ask at your local BMW dealer as the guys in the workshop have sometimes got them in their tool box's where they have removed them.

Also have a look at the F650 SITE loads of really great info on there

I know that just a few weeks ago my local dealer still had a full set of the most modern Dakar panels for sale. If you're interested it's Bristol Motorrad, 0117 9711447, ask for Darren. And by the way... I loved my 650GS and few people here would dispute the fact that it's the most suitable out of the two bikes if you are mostly gonna ride on tarmac. :thumb2
