Hi

My son Mozzer has got a 650 Dakar, its going for a MOT Thursday but I'm worried about the fork seals, they did show a little sign of seepage.

Are they an easy job to change??

I will put it in for its test first then if it passes it gives me more time fix it.

How long is a piece of string? Depends on your mechanical skills really!

You need to slide out each fork leg, remove the dust seal, locating circlip and then get the seals out without marking the sliders or fork legs.

Impossible in situ... so you need to release the bolt at the bottom of the forks, then take off the top cap and release the spring (oil everywhere) grip the fork leg in a vice, no marking them please, and then use the chrome stanchion like a slide hammer to pull out the old fork seal.

Bits now everywhere, make a note of where they come from, oil all over the floor and wall

Re assemble the chrome slider into the leg, but might need to put the spring in and top cap to stop the damper tube (the bottom bolt goes into) from turning as you tighten the bolt. New fork seal slid down the stanchion and into position.... don't use a drift to send it home, you'll knacker it... wants the special part, or home made drift for full and proper contact with the oil seal, to drive the fork seal home without marking the stanchion, fork leg or oil seal

One of those cases... if you know what you're doing then no probs. If you don't it'll cost ya in the long run.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing :blast

And it will cost in the region of £200 at the dealers (for both seals and new oil of course)

If you got a dakar, remember to release the top yokes pinch bolts first, before removing the stanchion caps.

Brassmonkey... it was meant to sound scary... if our friend Marks Adventure never had a Meccano as a kid, and doesn't know one end of a spanner from another then it needed to be scary

I sometimes think that if someone has to ask then maybe they shouldn't be doing the job! For anyone with some mechanical aptitude then it is a simple task, but for someone who hasn't then a little knowledge is a dangerous thing

Komatias... Yup :thumb2 ... but leave the lower fork pich bolts tight (Dakar) while you loosen the stanchion caps ;)
