Hi

My son Mozzer wants to fit additional lights to his 2002 Dakar.

He has got some PIAA lights 002-x (only small ones, about 2" round).

I have got the job of installing them.

Which wires do i tap into for the feed to them?

Any help appreciated.:thumb2

if youre wiring them up with a switch and relay the best place to take power for the relay is from the sidelight up the front end, go from the sidelight to the switch then to the relay, tis always best to power the extra lights directly from the battery :thumb2

If you have headligts that are always ON, put in a switch/relay ,that way
you can turn them off/on
But also use it to power extra lights,by putting in a second switch and
relay

Try what I tell you at your own peril - I know nothing about electrics!

Good general wiring diagram here:

Last time I fitted fogs was on my pickup and I spliced to the original switch in the dash.
If you look at the diagram 86 (it'll be numbered on the relay) is the one you connect to a switch or live wire - I'd say it's best to splice 86 to a wire leading from an existing switch - that way it's already going through a relay as well.
It's well worth getting a multimeter - unplug the connector from the back of the headlight bulb and use it to see what's going on when you press the light switch.

Isn't there a problem with splicing to the wire that goes live at the bulb side when you flick the switch? To do with negative earthing - I think it's the earth wire that you use?

The easiest way to do it is to use the sidelight to power the switch / relay, the sidelight bulb is always on, it only turns off when the ignition goes off. Touratech do it that way for there aux lights which are fitted to my f650 dakar, not had any problems with the setup to date. If its good enough for them it'll do for me :thumb2

The layout is similar to Corkonian's pic only difference is that your picking up the power to the switch from the sidelight ( the black / white dashed cable on Corkonian's piccy). The wire you want is the grey/black one that feeds into the sidelight bulb(the small bulb below? the main bulb). Its easier to splice into because you don't have to break into the three wire loom that feeds the main bulb (h4 bulb) There's also enough cable there to do a proper splice, You just need to remove some of the black fabric wrap from around the cables.

i can do you a diagram if it'd help, Corkonian's looks easy enough to follow tho :D

Sod it, i've just modified a drawing i did for mystic's light setup

Pretty straightforwards if your son wants the lights to be switchable from the bars

If he wants them to only come on with high beam you need to splice into the high beam circuit. the wire you want from the 3 pin h4 plug is the white one i belive (brown is neutral / earth on the 650s, or it is on mine), splice a wire between there and terminal 85 of the relay. :D

aye it is from touratechs site, but its pretty much the standard wiring diagram for hella micro de fog lights as supplied by hella :D

I have the tt aux lights on my dakar and the wiring diagram i put up is how touratech have done it on 650's. Mainly because the diagram as supplied by hella will only work when the low beam bulb is lit. The low beam on the 650 switches off when you go to high beam. :blast where as the sidelight is on constantly :thumb2

Not that it matters too much, both methods will work, only the tt way will keep the aux lights burning on high beam as well. :D

I'd have thought it'd be better to run 86 to its own switch as shown. Don't want to be hacking into the bikes wiring too much if its still under warranty, Taking a feed from a bulb is one thing, but splicing into the switch wiring is another.

If the switch fails for some reason bm will most likely state the cause as the extra loading on the switch (however small) - means you have to pay.

Very true - I never had anything new enough to have a warranty before.

The TT lights really look the job - and get good reviews - but too costly for me a while.

the tt lights are good but tbh you could do the same thing for less than tt, i have both fog lights on mine, total cost of around £200.

You can buy the de's for around £100 for a pair, complete with switches and relays, all thats left then is fabbing up some brackets, not hard to do really.
