Hi folks, out for a spin with me mate on a 2005 650GS and after a good thrashing his oil light came on. Thinking it was an electrical fault we rode home (8 miles) as there was no noise,lots of oil and the engine seemed to be running fine. Replaced the oil switch = oil light still on, earthed the switch wire and it went out. NO water in the oil and NO oil in the water. HELP any ideas

Have you checked that the switch you fitted actually works? If it's new it's unlikely that's the fault but you never know! You can test them by pushing a small rod (probably best not to use anything sharp) into the orifice, and use a multimeter to see if the switch works.

eh? earthed the switch wire and the light went out? shouldn't the light go ON when you earth it? anyway, check the wire- follow it from the switch towards the dash up the right-hand side of the bike. mine had rubbed through and was earthing on the frame behind the shock adjuster.

Some oil pressure sensors switches are normally open, some are normally closed. Can't remember off hand which the 650 uses, if it uses normally open you'd expect the light to be on for an open circuit, and off if you earthed the wire.
Thanks mouse, I have since swaped the new switch on another bike and the light went out so switch is ok. Will check the wire from start to finish but I still think the oil pressure is low !

Is it an early 2005 bike? Is it out of warranty?
I had this problem on my 2004 650GS phoned BMW assist, they came and collected the bike, repaired it and delivered it back to me. Said that the switch was corroded, so it was an intermitent problem.

I think that if the oil pressure was low the engine have gone bang already.
You could try loosening the switch and running the motor, if you've got pressure it'll come pumping out.

We have now got to the bottom of the problem, the pressure oil pump has seized due to some sort of contamination in the oil. The bike was due an oil change but only just, now rebuilding the oil pump etc and hope not too mich damage done ............ !

Wow, that's the first time I've ever heard of an oil pressure waring light coming on due to genuine low oil pressure! Just goes to show, it does happen, don't always assume it's the sensor!
I'm curious as to how the pump can seize if the engine is still turning, isn't it driven direclty from the crankshaft?
Anyway if you didn't work the engine hard, and only rode it about 8 miles, I'd be quite hopeful there won't be any damage. It's possible that gravity would feed a small amount of oil around the lubrication circuit, as the oil tank is higher than the engine.
