Hi all,
I am new to the site having just purchased an 03 650gs with 25,000 on the clock.
The bike is great and i am realy enjoying it, however it is very slow to pickup up to about 3,000 revs. Is this normal or has anyone any surgestions on what maybe wrong.
If this is the norm are there any easy perfomance tweeks that can be done to overcome it i.e. performace exhaust, K&N air filter.

Thanks,
Neil

Slow on the uptake.....?

Hi Neilb,

Is it a restricted 33bhp bike?

Mrs Ps 05 F650GS is restricted and has a slower throttle response due to a longer travel throttle compared to my 'non restricted' 50bhp 06 F650GS. My bike is also fitted with a aftermarket Scorpion exhaust can which frees the bike up a bit, it pulls like a train and sounds awesome.......!

Both our bikes are F650GS Twinsparks rather than the earlier single spark model!

Check out www.f650.co.uk aswell as there is a lot of good info and links there.

Cheers FP.

They generally are slow on the pick up. Then again you should be riding in the range of 3000-5000rpm which is where the torque is best.

Also have a look on www.f650.com for more info. Be sure that the bike is not restricted to 33bhp which only allows you to use 1/2 of the throttle.

As far as performance mods go, K&N does not filter as well as the BMW paper filter, exhausts only save weight and extra chips are way to overpriced for minimum gain and should only help if combined with an exhaust and high flow air filter.

If you want acceleration get a 15tooth sprocket. If you want good commuting at 70+mph get a 17tooth one.

Thanks for the help and quick respones.

It is not restricted but i suspect its just the way it is and i need to keep the revs up a bit.

I will also consider putting a perfomance exhaust on to see if it helps and to add a bit of noise (its nice to make an entrance).

Does anyone know which exhausts are good and fit on easy?

I've got the Remus on mine. Expensive, noisy, no more power. If you're looking for a noticeable increase in bhp you'll need to spend some serious cash - which would probably be better spent on a different bike IMO.

Have a look over at the FAQ's on f650.com for a better source of information.

Yeah sorry forgot to mention that you get bugger all bhp gain from any aftermarket exhaust. It is all down to the fuel map. If you really want to make the bike go you need, porting, blueprinting and changing the fuel map.

Not worth the hassle as the engine is bomb proof and you dont want to change that. Get a 15th sprocket and that'll keep you nicely in the torque band at all time. At motorway speeds however it will vibrate your teeth out.

Why not leave the bike as a standard machine have fun riding it about and when your happy trade it up to a larger faster bike. Or am I looking at it from the wrong direction?
