It's time to change the showa shocks on my 650GS ready for our RTW next year.

The front fork springs are being replaced but I am unsure as to what type of shock I should put on the back.

Do I go for Hagons - WP - Ohlins etc etc??? Whatever goes on will need to be re-buildable.

Any advice or experiences shared will be invaulable.

Öhlins rear, the 1150's rear is the dogs, i've tried to get it to fade
but nothing doing ;)

BTW whats the handling like with the extra fuel ?

Lisa:

The Schalber Rallyes use WP and they're highly rated on the F650. Haven't tried one though. I've ridden a 650 with an Ohlins rear and it was a great improvement (the standard spring doesn't cope well with heavy loads when the going gets rough . . . but, it increased ride height so check it out first as I know you're not tall. I'm actually going for WP on my 1150 but I think Ohlins are better made and most specialists I've spoken to who deal in both favour the Ohlins. Single shock for the F650 is not cheap though . . . £440 I think.

SPC/Wunderlich distribute the Ohlins, Bracken/Touratech do the WP (whereas they sell Ohlins for the 1100 and 1150).

The front fork spring upgrade is all well and good for Paris-Dakar stuff but don't go too stiff and make sure you get progressive springs. I know you'll be carrying a heavy load (and the heavier springs will work well over rough roads - or no roads) but for normal use they might make the ride a little harsh.

Try Motorworks for Ohlins - they're about the cheapest.
They sometimes have an Autumn sale and one in Spring, where you get an extra 10% off.
Paid £319 for a Front Ohlins for the 1150 - last month.

Ohlins if you can run to it.

Having had one on my Hayabusa I can heartily recommend their quality.
Despite handling like a dream after fitting, the bike just glided over bumps like they didn't exist.

Recommended.

650 Rear suspension

I had WP on my 1100 and it transformed the handling on and off road.
I went for the full monty and had hydraulic preload adjustment and rebound damping adjustment as per the OE unit, but also added compression damping adjustment - this was the icing on the cake!
After a little experimenting I had a suspension system that could be set from solo to two up with all the camping gear. Just a turn of the preloader knob between two points on the scale and I had perfect handling - firm but compliant.

Speak to Wayne Lamb at Vic Lamb Developments (WP Suspension UK) 01507 327509 - He should have a stand at the NEC - Just tell him the weight of minimum loading ie just you and your riding gear and the maximum - you, tent, pots & pans etc and he will valve and spring the suspension accordingly.

I've just had mine serviced - stripped cleaned, fresh oil and recharged with nitrogen for £70 inc p&p in 2 days

As soon as funds permit WP's will be going on the Adventure I'm well pleased with them.:D

Mike,

I've just replaced mine with Ohlnis front and back as well. What a difference.

Very, very pleased.
