Hello,

I'm getting my bike ready for its first MOT & my l/h indicators aren't working which I think may be the relay. Switch is clean & seems good.

Both bulbs are also good & the r/h indicators work fine. Connections on a relatively new bike will also hopefully still be strong.

My question is where's the relay?

I'm guessing I'll be pulling off a panel but before I start I wanted to get some advice.

My left hand heated grip hasn't worked for months either so any tips there would be good too.

Thanks!

If one side works and the other doesn't then it's not the relay I'm afraid ..

I'm thinking you might have a canbus issue as it's unlikely that you'll have both bulbs or connectors on one side fail at the same time..

Re the grip - could be a couple of things - see my recent thread here - which will detail the two most likely reasons to fail .... the supply cables inside the grip can break as can the current track on the resistor film under the grip rubber.

Sorry I can't help any more than this, but it looks like a trip to the dealer

Indeed, there's no relays, there's no fuses. All CAN bus. Worst case it's the on-board computer that's gone haywire. Happened on my K1200R. RHS indicator started going, couldn't turn it off, after a while it turned itself off, then it refused to turn on again. Solved with a new (under warranty) on-board computer.

Thank you gents. I love the amount of quality information available in minutes.

A very reluctant trip to the dealer it is.

Fingers crossed it's not the computer as thte bike it out of warranty!!!!!

If the left grip and left indicator aren't working, I'd suspect the wiring to the left handlebar myself. Have a poke around before you take it to BMW and see if there's anything come slightly unplugged.

Just wanted to report the source of the 'no left signal' indicator has been discovered & sadly but not surprisingly its the ECU with no signal being emitted.

Anyone know of a decent secondhand unit on the market or any cost effective alternative other then a genuine BMW part? The bike is already being treated to a new clutch & from previous dealings with genuine BMW replacements & considering the current one failed after 3 years I'm more then a little dubious!

I don't think there is an alternative but as ever any assistance appreciated.

Added to the recent financial outlay for new front fork seals, new water pump & failure of rear bearings I could have bought a 1000RR!

If it's only the indicator which has failed, and you need a cheap solution, it should be possible to fit the bike with a separate indicator system using a conventional relay from a pre-CANBUS bike. I'd think it should be possible to mimic the system on an 1150, if you can get hold of a wiring diagram for one. I'd imagine the only material expense would be the relay, wiring, and connectors. You'd have to power it from a switched source, of course.

However, there may be other things about to go wrong with the ECU, only time will tell.

Separate indicator is definitely an option & I will keep you posted.

Asking BMW is worth a try but I'm sure of their answer. No harm in asking though.

Motorrad Cateram were going to phone me back this afternoon with costs but didn't. Probably wondering how they'll spend all the cash they'll be making out of me.

They did say a new ECU will have to be 'programmed' to sync with the other electrical systems on the bike at a separate cost. Brilliant.

Looking forward to receiving their call.

Thanks for the input gents.

The ECU costs a mere £268. It then requires 'coding' for a bargain £80 & fitting which will cost 'about another £80'.

£428 for what is essentially a faulty indicator? (But would surely become something more, I know)

Added to the cost of a new clutch means I'm wearing my unhappy face. My very unhappy face.

Parts from BMW as I don't have a choice. Work including hopefully the 'coding' somewhere else.

That's approx £2000 in 4 months. Yes I've done big miles but it has been serviced as it should at BMW dealers.

Never again! (& Apologies for the rant!!!!)

ECU woes

I had a problem with a ECU on the car and took it to a repair shop who know how to repair, not "replace".

Excellent 24 hour turn around and just up the road from me too !

I don't know if they do bike ECU repairs but it's worth a phone call to see if they want to start doing them :augie.

They have hundreds of ECU's arrive by post every day from main dealers doing them on an exchange basis and charging the customer for "their" work. Postie carried two sack fulls in the day I collected mine.
