You bastards can't get in here quick enough to give me grief can you but I'm going to ask anyway because I thought I already knew what oil my 800gs took, as far as I'm aware and in the manual, most people seem to use 10w 40 semi.... Not now, popped into bmw battersea to get a small tub for my trip and have been told that's old news, we don't use that anymore.... Is 15w 50 semi now. Has anyone been told this or aware of this? If your going to pull my pants down and bend me over can you answer the question afterwards please?

10 - 40w during my recent service at Balderstons!

No grief from me, we both use another forum :beerjug::beerjug:

Yes :nod

I found the same at Cannon BMW, Braintree Dealership

Thing is It is not all dealerships got the memo yet and most that service their own will not get the memo at all or care about it. I don't think they will recall the owners manual :D:D:D

I think it was introduced in an attempt to confuse riders of the 1200 :nenau

To add to that though, I was told by my main dealer that the oil used during running-in is thinner than the following oil fills. Is that true?

I think you are mistaking us for the 1200 Hexhead and LC sections.

The people on the 800 section do appear to be much more friendly and helpful, so I know where you are coming from but thankfully not here.

:clap

The Book say's to use 10-40 with a ma rating. I use Mobil 1 10-40 motorcycle oil. It has been good for the last 80,000 miles. No valve adjustment need. A thicker oil takes longer to reach the valve train. which takes the most beating. A thicker oil also takes longer for the cam chain adjuster to load the chain.

Interesting....I've just bought a new F800GT. The dealership reckoned the oil needed is 10/40 semi synthetic but the riders manual says 15/50 ditto. Maybe BMW has changed its recommendation? It wouldn't be the first time... Castrol is recommended in the handbook. FWIW my own inclination is to go with the 15/50 on the basis that the engine seems to run quite hot (though of course it will do as it beds in; the hot weather doesn't help in this respect either).

I recently changed the oil and filter. I considered going fully synthetic, but various searches had that as a no no. After a bit of shopping around, I found this.http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/c.../engineoils/4-stroke-oil/?521772072&0&cc5_864 Although, I think it was a bit cheaper then.

All went well. started her up, and the valve train rattle went away after a few seconds (just like normal). Took her for a spin, and all was good. The next day, I went for breakfast with a mate to the 'The Ace', and as she got a bit hotter in traffic, I noticed the change in to 6th was getting notchy.

The next proper ride I went for was the same. As the bike got hot, the gearchange deteriorated, and I'd often get a false neutral between 5th and 6th. So, I changed the oil again, going back to the Castrol Power 1 that North Oxford use. After that, everything returned to normal.

Based on my experience, the 15w/50 might be better.

As an aside. Whilst investigating the notchy gearchange, I noticed that I'd worn away the bottom of the gearchange rubber with my boots. The new rubber was the best £3 I've spent on the bike. I might have got away with the Valvoline!
