I have an F800GS 09 but keep thinking i will feel better on a cheaper bike and the only bike i can see worth looking at is the Dakar. i will use it for road and green lanes. The 800 is a great bike im just concerned about the cost of it, and looking at it the dakar will do everything the 800 will do. i have ridden a dakar and liked it but that was a while ago.... should i change to a dakar or keep the 800 and stop worrying?

thanks

stop worrying, just stick some vrash bars on and just ride it.

my dakar great bike and would trade to 800 if had chance

Got crash bars on it already...

Why would you trade up... for what reason?

I on the other hand would not trade my dakar for an 800, them new bikes are far to complicated for their own good :rob

Jeez i'm starting to sound like proff :hide

For a start theres the canbus electrical system, a system that'll slap you in the face if you even look at it wrong, woe betide you if you want to add an electrical item to the bike. Then there is the fact that i just don't like it, at all :nenau

650

The Dakar is bullet proof do anything go anywhere bike and for £2/3k buy one great bike the 800 not the best off road it's just too big and has it's own breakable problems keep the 800 road only and find a 650 for fun:D

I moved from a 650 to an 800, and would never go back.

Don't get me wrong, the 650 is a brilliant bike, and I really enjoyed it, but you do have to thrash it everywhere. It can take it, but the 800 is far quicker, and far more relaxed. now you've had an 800, I'm sure you'll miss the performance.

If most of your riding is off-road, then most of this is no issue, so go ahead.

for no logical reason at all just that i love the 800, was on one whent hey first were released and just loved it, fact they have a lot of teething problems to sort out is why i did not go and buy one but instead kept the dakar

in saying that i just got back from france and the dakar (even 33bhp restricted) held its own, it leaned over intot he corners as much as any sports bike and i was even asked to slow down as i was just riding the hell out of it and it was able handle it all and even more.

then when go to a filling station here are the results and we filled up around 130miles each time

XTZ750 with mods - 18.1L
VFR800 Vtec - 16.7L
Lil old modified Dakar - 9.2L

so there is no logical reason for em trade up to the 800 bar i just like the look of it

thats my concern too,

but be honest, i like the 800 and would like one, but wouldnt sell the dakar for it, i would have to keep both :beerjug:

some mixed views.... performance isnt a problem, im not into speed and had a tiger 1050 before the 800. the 800 is a great bike to ride on and off road, i just cant help thinking i can to the same on cheaper bike..... so i can save a bit of cash.:augie

well reality is you have bough the bike and are you willing to take a hit and loose out on the resale of the 800 just to get some extra cash in had when buy the 650?

well yeah, or i wouldnt be thinking about it...

at the end of the day, its not about the 800, its should i get a dakar? will it be ok for what i want....

i like off road, and road riding and planning a trip round europe soon too.

see i thread in the iireland section. i am just back from 10 days in france, my dakar is modified a lot but its also 33bhp as my 2 year license is still counting down and the bike was brilliant and that was it restricted. i kept up pace and other 2 lads taught i was hammering it too fast a lot fo the time as couldnt keep up in the twisties.

on motorway it cruised at 90mph happily
